New Study Finds M-Rated Games Sell Best
Posted by XanTium | September 10 21:40 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
The new study, titled "Console Intelligence Brief 2007" examines the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 since each consoles' release through June 1, 2007, and comprises some 219 retail and 187 downloadable games made available on the new platforms, examined by genre, ESRB rating, gross sales in the United States, MetaCritic scores, online functionalities, multiplayer capability and other core game features.

Among the sample results made available, the study found that critics' favorite list and the blockbuster charts have a lot in common, with highly-rated titles selling up to five times better than titles with lower scoring reviews.

Notably, according to the study, mature-rated titles, comprising 10 percent of all US retail games examined, have both the highest average MetaCritic scores and the highest average gross sales in the United States -- despite the fact that some major retailers decline to sell them.

Big games don't sell well because they are M-rated, they sell well because they are good games.

It's NO surprise, since more and more generations of people are playing games..

some of us 25-30 year olds play alot of games compared to say our parents when they were 25-30 or maybe a slightly older sibling...

and since so many "older" people are playing the games now... who has the money? the 8-13 year old or the 25-30 year old?

nintendo type kid games sell VERY well but M rated still beats 'em ..

Because NOW a days people blame other people and other things on why their child acts out...
"oh it was the video game that made my 13 year old shoot someone"
etc etc...

So even the parents that play games still go and buy their kids non M rated games even if they do not agree some just abide by it thinking "why take the chance" "maybe their is something to it" type of additude..

they do not buy them as many games because they themselves (parents 25-30) had to purchase their own M rated games lol

just my opinion.

that pretty much sums up what i was thinking when i first read the topic... cause a high percentage of the popular mainstream games are rated M so that right there damn near guarentee's that M rated games are going to sell the most.

so all-in-all that article is pretty much pointless since when one thinks about it, u can pretty much come to that conclusion yourself wink.gif

To me, this is the real newsworthy part of the article. For those of us who have been gaming for a long time now, it indicates that publishers cannot simply package a turd in a nice box and push it out the door. Movie tie-in games are often notoriously poor.

Quality matters, and the buying public is finally starting to catch on.
