Putting PS3's Backwards Compatibility to the Test
Posted by XanTium | 11-9-2007 0:23 EST

From wired.com:
[QUOTE]
The folks at Curmudgeongamer decided to test the backwards compatibility of both the 60 GB and 80 GB versions of the PS3. With graphs and everything!

Using Sony's Software Compatibility Search tool and his own library of 90 PS2 games, Curmudgeon's jvm found that the 60 GB was compatible with 98.9% of his games. All but one worked perfectly, or with "minor inconvenient issues" like corrupted audio or graphics. The 80 GB didn't fare quite as well: 12 of jvm's games were unplayable, giving the unit an overall score of 84%.

Not really news IMHO. We already knew by the PAL release of the PS3 that software emulation wasn't as good as the original hardware.

I was kinda surprised he gave it 84% although only 56% of his games worked as they should. This was a very generous score and I can guarantee that the other 46% would be played on the PS2 anyway.

He gave it that number because he included games that have only minor issues. If you look at the BC site you'll see a lot of minor issues listed like, "At various points throughout the Opening FMA sequence, the graphics jitter" (from FFX). So it may not "play like it should", but an issue like that hardly matters.
