Microsoft Dismisses Wii Sentiment
Posted by XanTium | September 12 17:42 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From next-gen.biz:
[QUOTE]
BrandIntel's study, "Top Video Game Console Report: Consumer Insight Monitor" rated purchase intent for the Wii at 3.7, followed by Xbox 360 at 3.4. PlayStation 3 was ranked at 3.1, just above neutral on the five-point scale.

A rep for Microsoft responded to the study in a prepared statement to Next-Gen, saying, "We are exactly where we need to be at this point in our lifecycle, and would not trade places with anyone"--an expected response from a Nintendo rival.

BrandIntel found that the Wii's relatively low price, intuitive control scheme and general focus on the causal player drove consumer sentiment. The report showed that Xbox 360 was tops with the hardcore crowd, though.

"When we launched Xbox 360 back in November 2005, we knew that strategically it would be imperative for us to first win over the hearts and minds of the core gaming audience before focusing on a broader audience. If gamers didn't love us, we didn't stand a chance," the rep said.

Well I'm not really bothered if Wii is top of the market, dosent mean I'm gonna rush out and buy one. I remeber when Ps2 was at the top of the food chain but I stayed with my trusty old Xbox. Xbox was the best console alvailable for my needs in the past and now the 360 is the best. That's my opinion anyway!

Wii is boring. More people may be all for it, but ask them how many of their games they play often and youll probably find a lot smaller group than the 360 crowd.

Hence the "casuel" gamers like I who doesn't have time to spend over 3 hours on gaming a day.

I have an Xbox 360, I have a Wii, and I like them both. You get your traditional gaming with the 360 and innovation with the Wii.

I don't think the Wii can satisfy it's own install base outside of the very casual gamers. Sooner or later they are going to purchase a 360 or PS3. Halo 3 will make some waves but I think GTAIV will be the turning point.

The Xbox 360 was released in 2005?? Was it really that long ago? lol

I wrote a column about this Xbox 360 v Wii topic a few days ago and going to submit it on my Xbox news site (Not sure what the rules are here on advertising so Ill just leave it out). Ill link to it when its up. I just find it funny about what I wrote and then to log on here and see:

I guess I'm a "very casual gamer" then...
I just recently bought a Wii, and I'm having plenty of fun with RE4 and Metroid Prime 3.

My statement was worded terribly. I wanted to say that most Wii owners except for very casual gamers will buy a 360 or PS3 at some point this generation. That the Wii alone will not satisfy them enough to stop them from buying a 360 or PS3 for titles like GTAIV and [Insert favorite next gen game that knocks your socks off].

You own a PS3 and have talked about buying a 360 (you use to own one). Do you think your could sell your PS3 and just play Wii all this generation?

I could probably sell my PS3 - because I have a PC. As of the moment the Wii doesn't fulfill all gaming needs, but that might improve over time.

There are gamers that are strictly Nintendo though (and have been mostly Nintendo since the NES/SNES era) - it's just that the type of gamers that the xbox and/or PS3 is/are designed for won't be entirely satisfied with just a Wii.
