August NPD Numbers: 360 277k, PS3 131k, Wii 404k
Posted by XanTium | September 13 19:36 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
Specifically, the overall numbers are impressive, with game hardware and software sales combined up to $993 million in August 2007, from just $669 million in August 2006. Overall game hardware numbers were particularly strong, up to $384 million from $198 million the previous year, but all sectors saw growth.

Turning to hardware sales for the month, the top sellers for August 2007 in North America, listed in descending order with lifetime to date statistics in brackets, are as follows:
Nintendo Wii - 403,600 (4.0 million)
Nintendo DS - 383,300 (12.7 million)
Xbox 360 - 276,700 (6.3 million)
PlayStation 2 - 202,000 (39.1 million)
PlayStation Portable - 151,200 (8.3 million)
PlayStation 3 - 130,600 (1.75 million)

Comparing to July's sales, the Xbox 360's sales have surged from 170,000 to 276,700 thanks to its price cut, but the PlayStation 3's sales have actually declined in August over July's 159,000.

With halo 3 out, and if they dropped the price another 20 bux or so for christmas, they'd be sitting on huge profits into early next year rolleyes.gif It all comes down to how they play their cards...

Also, I thought the wii passed the 360 in total sales??? 4 million < 6.4 million last time I checked blink.gif

They are sales for north America. You see, the Wii is popular all over the world, unlike the 360 where most of the sales are in its home country.

And regarding what you said about the price drop and shit. Microsoft would be sitting on huge profits into early next year if they drop it another $20. Do you SERIOUSLY think you know better than these people? The bottom line in business is profit. There are things like customer service and marketing. But they all come back to profit.

I hate it when people think they know better. And i have a feeling halo 3 isn't going to be as big as people expect.

@Paronga - "Do you SERIOUSLY think you know better than these people?" According to this new article roday, Michael Pachter says Halo will sell 3 million units In 12 days. He also said he expects 360 console sales to reach 400k units. This estimate would definitely be enough to pass the DS next month; probably Wii too. "I hate it when people think they know better." LOL

halo 3 will sell and it will push consoles off the shelves. don't think of halo 3 as one big hit and then it's over. halo 3 will keep the 360 selling throughout the holidays.

Yeah, ignore the fact that it's gone gold before the release date. It's totally going to pull a Psychonauts... right off the radar by week 2.

Seriously, if you don't understand the industry, save the predictions for the big boys... mmkay?

Y'know, you said you hate it when people act like they know better than you do...

...

Maybe that's because they actually do. huh.gif

If you really knew the industry like you're pretending to, then you'd know that profit is a pipedream for the big three in the first two years of a console's lifespan (There are outliers in that model, a-la the Nintendo Wii). Inordinate development costs coupled with still pricey production costs keep the companies in the red for quite a while as far as Cost/Sale Price goes. Component price reduction is a work in progress for these companies for years after the release of the first model of their console. The original PS2 is a prime example. Having dealt with the insides of just about every NTSC model, I can safely say that the first ones look absolutely nothing like the SCPH-50001 model (the last one before the slim). Why? Because they found ways to run it smaller, cooler and cheaper. Companies make very little money off of hardware sales for quite a while after they've started reducing component costs.

The real money is in licensing.

Just quit while you're ahead...

or... well... just quit it for that matter.
