WinAmp 5.5 Beta: Remote Access Media on 360 (limited), PS3 and Wii
Posted by XanTium | September 13 22:43 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From biz.gamedaily.com:
[QUOTE]
This past weekend, we met up with Matthew Callaway, product director for Winamp, as he showed us the new Winamp Remote.
The product is relatively simple; users store their music files on a PC with Winamp running. Then they enable the application for remote access. After setting that up, users fire up the Wii or PlayStation 3 web browser and head to http://winamp.com/remote to sign in. As long as the host PC is on, has Winamp running and connected to the Internet, the user can allow a friend to stream music and video from that machine too. If the user was on the road, at a party, over a friend's or trapped in a coffee house with bad music, they can access their tunes remotely from anywhere with an Internet connection.

The software also further expands on the Winamp steaming media concept with a similar interface for cell phones with web browsers and the Xbox 360. Sadly, without a browser, the Xbox 360 can only stream media from a local PC and not from another location. Should Microsoft fix the problem, you should be able to use Winamp Remote there too.

Hopefully someday xbox will see...heh.

It'll stay that way.. Microsoft hasn't release a new non-windows web browser in over 7 years:

I just checked it out. There was once a program that did this same thing a few months ago called Orb. Same thing, but with Winamp branding.

I'm glad that you can steam from a local pc anyway, I only use Winamp for all of my music. So I am happy.

Nice, who said Winamp was dead, I use it everyday and it seems features still get added.

Yeah right. M$ will never give us what we really want. Towards gaming, xbox360 is awesome. Towards anything else xbox360 just lacks. I see a beautifull homebrew and app scene with ps3. And that makes me jealous!

Very nice. After an unpleasant experience i had with WMP overwriting all my album art with low-res incorrect garbage, this is a saving grace.

Gotta love winamp

HFG. What does this have to do with gaming ? Wow i can use a web browser to stream audio & video content. Again what impact does this have on gaming in general?

This statement from the article was also made in regards to the x360 "Should Microsoft fix the problem, you should be able to use Winamp Remote there too."

Well, there's nothing wrong with the X360. Just because it doesn't have a web browser means that it has a problem. I think the correct way to say that is " If M$ should decide to add a web browser to the X360 then you should be able to use Winamp Remote there too. That was done in a negative way towards the X360 & M$. But hey it's all good.

They make it sound so easy. I'm guessing I'd have an hour of firewall configuration to get it to work jester.gif How long until someone hacks it and takes remote control of your computer over the net too ph34r.gif

Good grief Winamp Remote was easy to set up. I just set it up remotely at my house and then went to my local computer at work, opened up a web browser and watched a flawless DivX video without any lag. It also streamed the video to my Treo also. Not the best picture, but there wasn't any lag and it was very watchable.

I did have to make a couple of software firewall exceptions and create a new rule in my Watchguard Firewall at the house.

Guess my videos and music will be virtually anywhere now!

XBMC still RAWKS!
