Relax, No New Xbox HD DVD Drive in 2008 *Updated*
Posted by XanTium | September 20 20:37 EST | News Category: Xbox360

*Update* From gizmodo.com:
Microsoft tells us that the information pointing to a new HD DVD drive in 2008 is a misquote and there is no plan to release a new HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360, despite reports to the contrary.
News-Source: gizmodo.com

---original news----
From engadget.com:
Details are beyond sketchy at this point, but Personal Computer World is reporting that Mark Bennett, Microsoft's European HD DVD business director, announced that Microsoft would be shipping a revised 360 HD DVD drive in 2008 -- presumably one with improved support for HD DVD's HDi interactive features, which Microsoft is touting as being "nine months" ahead of Blu-ray.

but what they didn't report about was when they would include the HD drive inside the 360 and not as an attachment/accessory...it will only be a matter of time - esp with the 360 and HD drives becoming cheaper to produce...

2 BIG problems with - "put HD DVD inside X360" besides cost.

- too slow - DVD speed in 2xHD DVD / 2xBlu-ray drives is 8xDVD.
DVD in X360 is 12xDVD (actually 16xDVD with firmware limiter to 12x so it can read DL-DVD at 12x speed)

-too slow access time
DVD ~110ms
2xBlu-ray >350ms (similar to 2xHD DVD)

-----------------------

New HD DVD drive for X360?
51GB triple layer support?
CH-DVD support?

good points which reinforce exactly why now is not the right time...as i mentioned it will be a matter of time...

Something is wrong here. Why would a new drive be needed for interactive features? The drive just reads bits off of a disc. It's the software on the 360 that handles all the fancy HDi stuff. And as far as I know, it is fully implemented already.

Relax, there's no need for HDMI and as of now there are no plans to release a 360 with that connection.........I never believe MS again.

Actually with a 360 with HDMI you can upconvert dvd's to 1080p, you can't thrue component unfortunetly so HDMI does have a use. (I know VGA works as well but the audio thrue HDMI is better)

Also any article that starts with "Details are beyond sketchy at this point" has to be taken with a grain of salt.

As far as seeing a HD drive built in i see it happeneing in the 720 or whatever they will call it, but not this generation.

Of course they're saying it's a misquote and they'll stand by that until the day you see the new drive sitting on the store shelves. They don't want consumers to hold off on purchasing the drives which are available now.

Well you know how it is with MS. Whenever theres a rumor that MS denies, it tends to be truel

IF and I say IF they use a HD drive in the 360 they would probably still be using DVD for games, in that case the HD DVD drive read speed for DVD media would still be 12x, but remain 2x when reading HD DVD.

ALSO

Heres a big selling point for HD DVD, region coding. Looks like most new bluray movies released Q4 2008 are using the 2nd stage encryption and having region coding on them. HD DVD have not even suggested using region coding yet.

I stay in the UK and I used import loads of region 1 DVD's but I now buy my HD DVD's from the states as, A they are released quicker and B they are cheaper. Region free movies are a great idea, if HD DVD stays this way then thats another big plus point for it.
