TGS 07: Bungie Triples Halo 3 Server Capacity
Posted by XanTium | September 21 21:26 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamespot.com:
[QUOTE]
Speaking at the CoFesta Forum at the Tokyo Game Show 2007, Bungie Studios' head of production, Jonty Barnes, told attendees at an Xbox 360 session that beta testing the product over Xbox Live had thrown up some interesting surprises.

Barnes said, "The amount of polish feedback was especially helpful, and we also found we had to triple our server capacity." As with any beta test, the company also found numerous bugs, which needed fixing, and solved some usability issues.

i would have to agree that the beta was a great success for everyone - i only wish that it lasted a little longer...oh, well, we are just days away from "finishing the fight"

glad to know that the servers needed a little upgrading, but triple the capacity...damn...

Tripling the server capacity doesn't mean they've turned on access to those servers yet. In fact, they haven't as you can see from this quote from today's (Friday's) Bungie Weekly Update:

"Ske7ch has been up to no good all week long, we've both been taking semi-regular breaks from pre-launch shenanigans to play some Halo 3 Matchmaking (when the servers have been up for testing) -- those servers will go live tomorrow, just in time for the press to start playing online."

What do Bungie's servers do exactly? Is it just matchmaking, or are there actually going to be dedicated servers to play on (rather than 360 users hosting like in all other games)?

I'm pretty sure they're still just doing matchmaking, no hosting. But this time around all the file sharing stuff is stored on their servers, which can eat up a lot of bandwidth and storage capacity.
