Xbox 360 Premium - HDMI Cable and Digital Optical Adaptor Hack
Posted by XanTium | October 1 20:41 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From chadledford.com:
[QUOTE]
If you're like me, you ordered the xbox 360 Premium instead of the 360 Elite because you wanted to save money. However, if you want HDMI going to your TV and Digital Optical to your surround sound, Microsoft has engineered the Premium in a way that requires you to purchase their HDMI cable with audio adapter for $49.99.

Because the HDMI and componet A/V cable slots are so close to one another, and the componet A/V casing is so thick, you cannot have both plugged in at the same time.

So the question remains, how can we stick it to the man and achieve HDMI video and Digital Optical audio without paying microsoft $50.

Like this wasn't planned out dry.gif
Looks like we will have to make the cable/adapter ourselves. Or let XCM do it smile.gif

The article describes a simple solution which involves a knife which I don't think is that bad, who looks at the back of the console all the time?

This is just my opinion.

The 360 hdmi port does not send digital audio through the HDMI cable? I thought that was one of the big selling points of HDMI is that everything is on one cable?

it does send it, the problem is most tv's don't have optical out for other inputs and most home theater amps don't have hdmi.

Ya gotta love Proprietary Hardware. (/Sarcasm)

That way they can charge you want they WANT for it.

Pelican will probably come up with a cheaper solution than a $50 adapter and cable set.

I get my HDMI cables from Monoprice.com. I don't pay outrageous prices for decent cables. Like Monster Cables, the biggest rip off.

Either get an HDMI receiver, or run HDMI into your TV, then Optical out to your receiver.

Spend some money and get out of the 90s.. biggrin.gif

I wonder, will this work using the red and white RCA sound ouputs? I've got an HDMI to DVI cable but no optical sound...
