Qualcomm to put Xbox360's Unified Shader Architecture in Mobiles
Posted by XanTium | October 3 22:29 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From electronicsweekly.com:
[QUOTE]
AMD [note x-s: they bought ATI in case you forgot ;)] has licensed the graphics processor technology behind the Xbox 360 to mobile phone chipset supplier Qualcomm.

This agreement will bring AMD's patented Unified Shader Architecture, first introduced in the Microsoft Xbox 360 gaming system, to Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipset for integration on mobile handsets.

Last week, Qualcomm told EW.com that it expected the design of mobile phones to move closer to PC-like platforms within the next two years. This AMD licence indicates that high performance graphics will be a key part of that trend.

Hooray! Qualcomm is awesome! I really want to work for them but I doubt I'll be able to. They're an awesome company. Top 100 to work for in the US. But yeah, graphics on cell phones, awesome. lol

Hey I work there! tongue.gif

About the GPU:

It's called the LT Unified GPU which is basically the 360 GPU scaled down for mobiles and consists of vertex and fragment shaders. This is the next step up from ATI's Imageon GPU. Specs:

21M Triangles /sec
PSP is 33M Triangles /sec

532M Pixels /sec (using 4x MDP scale)
PSP is 664M Pixes /sec

Max LCD: WVGA 800x480

The GPU core in this MSM will be working along side a 65nm 1GHz Dual-CPU (Scorpion/Arm9) w/ 128-bit Venum instruction set. This combination results in 3x the performance over Imageon and can push 512 textures in one pass as compared to Imageons 2 per pass.

I want one! love.gif
