Toshibia/samsing Power From Pc? Options

I have an extra toshibia/samsung ms25 xbox360 dvd drive and would like to use this to create backups. I know there is way to get power from the pc, so I dont have to open my xbox everytime. I found a diagram on this page (http://www.kev.nu/360/dvdshort.html) but I am unsure how to read it. I was wondering if anyone could help me with this.

What don't you understand on that? It seems pretty straight forward.

On the drive:
Pins 0, 2, 4 & 6 go to ground.
Pins 1 & 3 go to +12V
Pin 5 goes to +5V
Pin 7 needs a 3.3V supply (hence the 1086V33)
Pin 8 goes to the common of a switch for the eject.
Pin 9 is left unconnected

On the eject switch:
Common goes to pin 8 of the drive
The normally closed side goes to ground
The normally open side goes to +3.3V or Pin 7 of the drive

On the 1086V33:
G to ground
O to pin 7
I to +5V of the PC power supply

The only bit I'm not sure on is the 1086V33, as far as I can tell it is used for the eject function as it needs 3.3V not 5V. If you have a 3.3V suply in the PC (if you're lucky, I doubt it) then I presume you could just tap off of that. You may even be able to force the 5V to use 1.7V elsewhere and only allow 3.3V through to the switch/pin 7 via resistance of some kind.

You may be better off selling the drive (replacement drives are valuable) and using that money to pick up a new PC drive which you can flash to read 360 games (see the latest firmware update on the main news page for the Samsung model nos... i forget what they are), it may work out easier, better and cheaper for you.

Personally I would sell it and source a Samsung SH-D162C/SH-D163A, flash it with Kreon's Alternative Firmware V1.0 and use that instead. It would fit in the PC very nicely and be a lot less hassel.

sorry one more question. What exactly is a 1086v33? is it a resister, relay or something else

That's the bit I don't know i'm afraid. Looks to be some kind of voltage regulator or transformer of some kind but that's a guess

1086v33 is a voltage regulator. Should be able to pick one up from pretty much any electronics supplier.

Actually, 3.3v is available inside your PC. It's one of the standard voltages supplied by the PSU, and could easily be picked up from the ATX connector if you didn't want to use a voltage regulator. It's on the orange wires in the standard colour scheme.
