AMD's Feldstein: Future Game Hardware To Combine CPU, GPU
Posted by XanTium | October 29 12:47 EST | News Category: Xbox360
From gamasutra.com:
Both the Xbox 360 and the Wii have graphics processing units designed by AMD, and speaking in a Gamasutra-exclusive interview, the company's VP of strategic development, Bob Feldstein, provided some insight on the future of console gaming chips, speculating that GPUs and CPUs may someday be a single entity:
"I'll say that what I see the future as is a combined CPU/GPU, where the delineations are not there anymore. You combine them into a chip; you have compute elements of both, and jobs get kind of -- threads get kind of put on the resources that are best suited for them. GPU-like resources, vector engines for problems that simulate the real world, graphics, and physics. And for sequential problems, about other parts of this, you know, you've got your typical sequential processor."
interesting approach, would definitly solve all of the cpu->gpu bandwith issues although something tells me this is amd/ati 's cunning plan to secure itself place in one of the next gens consoles

old news. its was said with cpus having so many cores in the near furter that a video card will not be nedded sence a core or 2 can be dedcated to gfx. or even have a cpu with a gfx core built in memery and all.

Kind of interesting that this popped up... I was just reading an interview Edge did was Gabe Newell (from Valve/creator behind HL2 and orange box) saying how GPUs and CPUs are so similar that they'll be a single architecture in the next generation or two

wow, this is genius! this will open possibilitys! NOTE! this is pure irony from me. this was made for the pstwo years ago, so it's nothing new to combine cpu an gpu.

The trend in consoles seems to be muti-core CPUs with heavily multi-threaded programming. Chances are that Microsoft's next Xbox480000 will have even more PPC cores. I fail to see how AMD plans to capitalize on CPU+GPU in the game console market. Smells like wishful thinking more than a 'trend'.
In fact, the only place I could imagine a combined CPU+GPU might be useful would be in the laptop market.
