After Xbox 360: Microsoft's next console
Posted by XanTium | November 15 17:35 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From tech.co.uk:
[QUOTE]
It's almost two years to the day since Microsoft launched the Xbox 360. So you would expect its successor to be well on its way towards fruition. But Microsoft has dropped only a few subtle hints about what form it could take, and hasn't provided any details.
The most significant statement so far has been about timeframe. Supposedly, the next generation Xbox will arrive next decade, possibly 2011 or 2012.

So here's the bottom line for the Xbox in 2011, based on current trends and what we know is happening over the next few years. Check back here in 2011 to see if we were right!
* CPU/GPU - Integrated chip with 16 x 5GHz processor cores, 32 x 2GHz graphics cores
* Memory - 8GB GDDR8
* Media - Dual-format HD-DVD/Blu-ray drive for backwards compatibility and movies
* Storage - 4TB hard disk for online game (and movie) delivery
* Built-in camera - for gesture-based control
* Built-in microphone - for voice-recognised control

Not even a prediction of accelerometers in the controllers? Although by 2011 they might have something better...

Seriously WTF!! I don't think game consoles will ever come equipped with hard drive space larger then 500gb from factory.

Hopefully built in Wireless this time.

Was thinking it'd be out more like 2010, but WOW those are some insane specs already. Who knows though, in 5 years things could be ALOT different than now. pop.gif

Yeah, they pretty much made that up. Especially because technology is exponential, and rather unpredictable. Besides, if any of the technologies that exist in the lab today are out by then, they'll be using holographic disks for media, some small-sized huge amount of storage media, and other things. All their 'prediction' relies on is increasing the numbers in technology that exists today that will probably be outdated by then.

I don't disagree with you but you never really know i remember when dvd was just starting to be released and thinking how could anyone fill a dvd, what would it be used for apart from film. 20gb 5 years ago wasn't huge but it was far from small so who knows

I would truly like to see some kind of highly interactive virtual reality implementation but i guess i'm just living in the 80's

I'm far more interested in the shape of the internet in 5 years.. and what our average speed/bandwidth for the consumer will be. the specs for the console are of less and less importance in my view. So much of what we do is now driven by the online aspects, whether that be play, collaborative efforts, etc.

Imagine gaming without today's bottlenecks. No Lag gaming? Online multi player with dozens and dozens with no hiccups.

True spectator options while in large scale online games.

(yes.. I know people already have games with some of these options.. few are console based though.)

I suppose we could sit here all day and place out bets on what speeds we'll see, how many processors will be common, and how cheap and affordable solid state storage might be.

^^ True (about xbmc)

Those stats are pretty insane. As others have said, i reckon they'll change closer to the date. We've come a long way, but do you really think 4tb drives will exist, and be available for the mass market? Also, the built in mic and camera sounds like a good idea, but as long as they're not built into the console itself and are an addon on a cable. You wouldnt wanna have to smile at a camera thats in your console thats buried in your entertainment cabinet.

Also- dual format HD-DVD/Blu Ray player? Obviously they're not sure of their format, but its also a very close fight so i guess its ok to say that. But i also expected holographic discs (sound so futuristic) cos i heard they're gonna be around soon. Just have no idea when 'soon' means...

I think they could do the 4tb's then i dont think anyone will be complaining about the storage space for games but right now its still like 350 for a tb so well see
