DosFlash v1.4 Beta - DROM support
Posted by XanTium | November 18 14:04 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Schtrom released a new version of DosFlash(info) - a tool that allows you to read/write/erase the flash chips of many CD/DVD-ROM drives, including the Xbox360 BenQ drive (without HW modification).

What's new/fixed:
* DROM6316 flashing support
* a flash erase is now always done with a chip erase and not a sector erase command, because the sector erase gives problems for some Winbond flash chips including the DROM6316
* DosFlash.typ corrected and updated
* for a detailed explanation on the soft unlock look at the included file SoftUnlockByIriez.txt, it contains a very good explanation by Iriez from XBS, thanks for that one!

Official Site: n/a, by Schtrom

Why a DROM6316 support? Have I missed something, where would you find this drive? I know it's in some Dell systems but what role dose it have to the xbox 360?

You can flash a Philips DROM6316 SATA DVD-ROM drive with a BenQ firmware and XBOX 360 DVD-KEY allowing it to be used as a replacement for the original internal DVD-ROM drive. There is no firmware to run backups yet only originals!

Good news. This drive could be an option for people who are interested in a replacement for their dying drive and should be inexpensive. Availability doesn't seem that great now though. Who knows , maybe this could be quieter at faster speeds than the comparable drives using multi speed firmware?

Good work Schtrom

Just wondering,

Is dosflash now also the preferred method to flash Samsung dvd drives instead of
using MTKflash/mtkvia?

And is there also a trick to do the Samsung ms28 using dosflash?
Like there is with mtkflash by turning of the 360 and waiting 10 seconds....

If it was actually available, maybe. However these drives are really hard to get.
Unforuntately the drive has to match the Benq hardware-wise, otherwise it won't work. So its not just a matter of picking a more available drive.

Ok stupid question,Does this mean you can take a PC dvdrw and flash its firmware to be able to read xbox 360 games? if so would my lite-on SOHW 1633s work? and which firmware would i have to use?

@rcos if the drive is not listed in readme I wouldn't go flashing any old drive. You can brick your pc drive. Worst case scenario it'll blow up and take out your pc. biggrin.gif Kidding!

laugh.gif ya that wouldn't be good, ok so it doesn't say exactly if by "lite-on" they mean a pc dvd drive or an xbox360 drive, like i stated before i have a lite-on pc dvdrw drive so if it was on the list what firmware would i need to use and what about the size difference between xbox360 firmwares and pc dvd firmwares being different?

I just tried erasing two BenQ 64930C using this, got an error message "wrong firmware status"

they did read fine though.

also got a load of write errors when writing the firmware.

first drive bricked, second drive not bricked.

couldn't erase/write properly at all 1.4, going back to 1.3 let me erase and write both again as normal.

has anyone else had this problem? i'm using a via 6421 pci card.

Same here, I went back to 1.3 after the "Wrong firmware status" erorrs. I had this issue with my Syba VIA 6421.

I tried flashing a Benq drive with dosflash32, in winxp. chose YES on the first pop up, and the computer froze, peakin at 100% cpu, and deactivated my dvd burner and deamon image drive.
Had to reboot, and activate drives again.
But cant read or flash. I have a via pci card, and plextor burner.
Will this new release fix these problems, or are there other things i need to do to make it work.

Same error here with my Nforce mobo, I thought i had bricked my BenQ with 1.4 but TG 1.3 still could erase and write the flash....
