Streaming Bottleneck Because Of Slow Wifi? Options

Currently, when I stream large dvd VOB files to my ps3 they play back with 5.1 etc but are choppy and clearly not smooth.

If the file is smaller, like an mp3 etc if plays fine.

My wireless adapter on the pc is 802.11g, 54 mbs.

I was wondering if I upgrade this to a higher speed one with a speed of around 300 mbs, will this stop the problem?

Am asking here as I don`t fancy buying one to find it wont.

It may well be the problem.
I have no problems hard wired in.
is it not practical to simply Hard wire the connection.

802.11g max speed for the IEEE Spec is 54mbps.
If you want something faster you will need a new router/wireless access point that supports 802.11n.
And a new card in your PC that supports the new wireless standard.
802.11n max speed for the IEEE Spec is 248mbps.
The cost of 802.11n is more likely more expensive than it would be to run a cat5/cat6 cable to your PC.
Depending on your existing hardware the wired connection supports speeds of
10/100/1000 mbps.
There is a good chance it would fix it but no guarantee.
Try running a temporary wired connection and see if that provides enough bandwidth for the streaming to happen properly.
Keep in mind the PS3 wireless adapter is 802.11g, and the RJ-45 supports 10/100/1000 mbps.

Are they both using wireless?
How strong is the signal strength?
Does this only happen when the microwave is on, or someone on a wireless phone?
(802.11g runs on the 2.4Ghz band and most home wireless phones use that frequency and microwaves use it as well so they can cause interference)

Thanks all so far.

I was considering directly wiring it via the ethernet to test it byt then I got thinking that the ps3 wont recognise NTFS only fat32? Am I correct?

Therefore surely the ps3 wont play the files off the pc as they are over 4gb or does the fact that it is wired via network solve this?

My files system is NTFS. All works good. I think the problem is definitely data loss due to using the wireless connection.

Thanks mate. Well that at least saves me spending money on something that wont work!

I will have a think about what I want to do then as I don`t really fancy funning a cable from bedroom to the living room.

I may just get a hard drive based media player such as a TviX.
