i just bought a modded 360 and got it home it played fine for like 4-5 hrs then when i went to change a game i got the red ring. when i bought it it had extra cooling fans and such and i questioned him if it had problems with over heating and he said no. so can anyone tell me is this the dreaded red ring of death thing or do i more than likely have an overheating problem and can this 360 be fixed or did i just get totaly skrewed? any help would be nice.

uh-oh.
This doesn't sound too good. How many lights are lit on the ring of light?

What type of fan is it? One that plugs into the USB on the back of the console? I believe there is one make (Nyko?) which has/can cause some issues. Try it without the fan plugged in, see how it goes.

I hope you did not pay much for it. This problem will not go away. It will only get worse and you will end up needing to get a new console soon.

The whole overheating thing is so pointless its unbelievable how much merit is given to it.
You are only changing the thermal expansion of the solder joints slightly.. this may be enough to overcome the microcracks in the BGA joints for a short time but it is far from a good solution..

So he's admitted to selling you a faulty console? Did he tell you it was faulty to begin with? If not, get a full refund. Legally you are entitled to at least this much.

as above, get a refund, dont even bother touching it, you could do the x-clamp mod, but you was never aware of any fault, if you messed wih it and made it worse then you'd never get your money back.
in all honesty it sounds like its a regular problem, as he knew what to do and even had extra fans, so i doubt its happened only once before
