Encode360 2.0 RC2
Posted by XanTium | December 3 23:50 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Dan released a new beta of Encode360(info) - an application which will convert virtually any video format to high quality WMV's which can be played by the Xbox 360 or the Microsoft Zune device:
[QUOTE]
This release is primarily to bring some components up to date, and some minor code changes to hopefully prevent against a few problems. I spent some time yesterday investigating the possibility of removing K-Lite and configuring the codecs on the fly through Encode360, but it just looks too difficult to do right now :(

Given that Microsoft are probably going to be supporting DivX content with the dashboard update due tomorrow, I think you can pretty much scrap the need for this apps existence so at this point, development will probably stop. Thanks for everyone's support on the project so far, particularly the forum moderators who gave up their spare time to help people out with problems. Oh, and Happy 1st Birthday Encode360, although a bit belated. It was about 2 weeks ago ...)

Encode360 2.0 RC2 Changelog:
* NEW: Command-line option /Auto etc. for automatic encoding
* NEW: Updated with support Vista Controls (Class Library from http://www.codeproject.com/vista/VistaControls.asp by Pedro M. C. Cardoso)
* CHANGE: Upgraded to VS2008 Project
* CHANGE: App Manifest for UAC (will hopefully prevent against regkey write failures because of running under standard user mode that was mucking up some filter settings, such as 5.1 audio through AC3Filter and subtitles under ffdshow)
* CHANGE: Updated MediaInfo to 0.7.5.5
* CHANGE: Updated K-Lite to 3.5.7

Will there be much of a need to use this now that DivX and Xvid is supported? uhh.gif

EDIT: Nevermind, just properly read the article.

Good work anyway though.

I dont know about you, but most of my video content is in h264 not xvid or divx, so yes, this program is still very handy.

How does xvid/divx compare to wmv-hd, to justify cancelling Encode360? I for one seriously hope this doesn't happen. The average xvid has appalling quality. And as stated earlier in this thread. A lot of hd-content is in h264.

Coupled to the (once properly set-up) one-click-conversion this handy app provides, makes it a must have for the time being!

I'm pretty sure that program will still be needed by a lot of people...

x.264 hasn't been confirmed for 360 support yet and this converts it into the 360 friendly wmv format and keeps dd sound.

For hidef re-encoding this will be perfect.

Certainly a lot easier and user friendly than TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress...

And a hell of a lot cheaper too.

I'm doing a test now and will report back later as to my results...

Actually x264 is already there since the last update, it's divx that is probably gonna be added today. The problem with x264 is the lack of 5.1 sound. However, divx should support Dolby 5.1 (like WMA Pro supports 5.1, one of the niceties of Encode360).

I suppose the biggest drawback would be that divx doesn't match the quality of WMV-WVC1, and I understand that a lot of people are converting HD content with Encode360.

Thanks to everyone for their nice comments about the app. It's nice to know all my hard work hasn't gone unnoticed smile.gif However, I just don't have the time to continue development on it, and I haven't gotten really any assistance on the code at all, even though it's freely available. I have no problem if someone wants to pick up development on it, but for the moment I myself, am officially putting this on the backburner.

Cheers, Dan

Hehe, didn't know there was a difference between x264 and h264! Thought it was one of those MPG / MPEG, same difference type of things.

See? I have absolutely no business developing an encoding application! biggrin.gif

Well you know more than me...

This crap confuses the hell out of me.

Right...

As far as I know:

QUOTE
x264 is a free software library for encoding H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video streams. Written from scratch by Loren Merritt, Laurent Aimar, Eric Petit, Min Chen, Justin Clay, Måns Rullgård, Radek Czyz, Alex Izvorski, Alex Wright, and Christian Heine, it is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License.

MKV is a container. People are using X264 to encode stuff and putting it in the mkv container.

It has 5.1 sound and I want to watch it smile.gif

360 won't play it, but your program will let me convert it into wmv so that it will.

There are other progs to change it to mp4, but then you only get 2 channel sound.

Screw that.

Whatever you've done, it's very useful, and a lot quicker than what I was using before.

The guide for the other method is here: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=611163

Yours is far easier, and takes 20% of the time. When the encode is done, I'll give you my feedback.

It's a pity the first I hear of this is today. But even if you don't do anything else with it, if it's as good as it seems, you'll have a great legacy.

Ah okay, I see what you mean. x264 is the app to encode h264 (which is what I originally thought!).

The MKV container can hold different audio/video streams. So... Although h264 is being used for the video (h264 mp4 is the same codec being used for blu-ray), the audio is probably an AC3 stream.

When run through Encode360, Directshow filters take over to split the audio and video (via Haali Media Splitter), at which point ffdshow handles h264 video, and AC3Filter handles the AC3 audio. These both the get combines into the WMV format (WMV8, WMV9 or WVC1 for video, and WMA Pro for audio). WMA Pro supports 5.1 on the 360, whereas AC3 audio is not supported. FYI, WVC1 is the codec used for HD DVD.

The MP4 container usually wraps h264 video and AAC audio which are both supported on the 360, so h264 IS supported, but AAC audio is only 2 channel, hence the disadvantages of encoding to MP4.

Hope that explains things a bit! smile.gif

This app will still be very useful for people that have banned consoles, as they can't DL the h.264 and Divx codecs without Xbox Live. MS locks the codecs to that individual console/profile making it impossible to move the codecs to another system.

This will also be helpful for anyone that wants to run homebrew w/ their system. Many people have stated that this latest dash update will remove the possibility of downgrading to an exploitable kernel with the timing attack.

Please don't abandon this project, as many of us will never stop using it.
