Dual-layer DVDs expected to see high demand in 2008
Posted by XanTium | December 5 02:27 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From digitimes.com:
[QUOTE]
Since Ritek and CMC Magnetics expanded their 2.4x dual-layer DVD production capacity starting in 2007, pricing has dropped from NT$70-80 (US$2.17-2.48) to NT$55-60, which has helped to boost market demand, according the market sources.

The demand for dual-layer DVDs in 2007 is to be around 190 million units and is expected to go up to 400 million units in 2008, according to disc makers citing a report from BOC.
Additionally, optical disc makers pointed to the popularity of Xbox 360 games consoles and the potential for backup game copies running on modified systems to further drive blank disc sales.

Ritek S04 is hardly junk. It is proberly the second best DL you can get behind Verbatim. I love it and its 1/3 the cost of Verbatim.

Give me a break! Xbox360 scene usage of DL can't be that high to the point that it has such a great effect on DL sales worlwide... or does it?

In anywayz Both Ritek and CMC are not exactly quality manufacturers. Memorex, Princo, Traxdata, NoName and other coaster products are made by them. If you want to talk about quality lets talk about Taiyo Yuden and then you have good quality manufacturers (TDK, Fujifilm, Maxell, Mitsubishi...) and the rest that are questionable quality wise (Ritek, Princo, CMC, Gigastorage... )

I'm willing to bet the numbers are higher than you think. Most people just don't use dual layer DVD's, you can get 5 single layers for the cost of 1 dual layer. But there is finally a market for them. Probably enough of one to keep driving the production of dual layer disks. Right now I'm lucky if I can even find them in stores.

Who are these people that Question Ritek media?

IMO it's the best media you can buy...

I don't have any 360 backups but I know on older consoles with finicky lasers Ritek meida is often the ONLY media that will work.

In terms of minis for Gamecube Backups/homebrew you're pretty much faced with Ritek G04 or pot tweak the laser assembly to read something else.

Not to mention they're one of the only media companies that tests and publishes compatibility charts with their media on the various burners and firmware combinations on the market... so rather than guessing and checking you can see the kind of quality you'll get with your burner and their media before you even spend a penny.

Back in the day, the G04 media was the best. Then the G05 came out, and I'm done with Ritek.

Ritek was great on the xbox1 because the laser was much more forgiving, while the 360 is much less. That said, I will still will be buying Ritek for all my other data backup.

I've had good experiences with Ritek DL media. Verbatims have been the best for me. Riteks are not far behind. I've had the most problems with Memorex DL, although even with those I've only had 2 or 3 bad disks. I just buy Verbatims now that the price is barely more than the Riteks.

Verbatims are the best yes, but at a cost. I recently found Ritek S04 media to be the best media for me. It works great in XBOX360/PC and has low PIE/PIF which is comparable to Verbatim and at a fraction of the cost. The previous Ritek D01 were not so great and many burners were picky with it such as on the layer break. Verbatims will always be the best and ill buy them for single layer DVDs but for DL, Ritek S04 unless Verbatims drop down seriously drop it price.
