XBL: Max 100 Friends? - Microsoft Looking into the Issue
Posted by XanTium | December 10 20:21 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From 1up.com:
[QUOTE]
There is something like 40 people on my own Xbox Live friends list, but there isn't a week that goes by someone doesn't bring up the fact that you can't add more than 100 people.

"I think it's something we definitely want to do and something we're looking at doing in the future, but it's been more technically complicated than anyone anticipated, so it's taking longer than we had hoped," said Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg to 1UP, while walking through the new dashboard update a few weeks back. "We will get there in the future."

i thought it was something as simple as changing the XBOXLIVEFRIENDSLIST.ini

from:

<FRIENDS>
MAXFRIENDS = 100;
;set max amount of friends on a buddy list 0 = unlimited
</FRIENDS>

to

<FRIENDS>
MAXFRIENDS = 0;
;set max amount of friends on a buddy list 0 = unlimited
</FRIENDS>

Did the original xbox support 100 friends?
It probably has to do with changing the master database with all the Live accounts, and they don't want to do something that might corrupt data and cause more problems. I would really hope it's not because the developers have been hard-coding '100' into their games, for some dumb reason.

I don't see how big of a problem this is, it should be a simple ini or config file change in my opinion, but you know microsoft

Probably no one cares, but one of the technical reasons for limiting friends is the friends-only leaderboard query. 100 is expensive enough.

How many people have reached this limit? It seems that if those people removed the various "friends" they played 1 game with about 3 months or whatever ago, they'd make A LOT of room.

My thought on this is, 100 is good enough. Once you go over that number, there are going to be people that really aren't your "friends" but people that you met once and never played again. I have something like 35 people on my list with only about 5-8 people that I play with regularly, and I'm sure that every one like this.

yeh i have 20 something on my list
i would be lucky to play with any of them or a regular basis
i reckon if you have more then 100 friends on your list you need to go out and find some real friends

Every couple of weeks I get a friend invite from people I've never even played with, just because I've played certain games they're interested in. If people were more selective with their friends this wouldn't be a problem.

Can you imagine having 100 active actual friends on at once? MADNESS!

(That said, the option should be available)

I only add people i know in REAL LIFE

Yes, that thing were you go for a drink, play footbal (soccor, whatever) and can PHYSICALLY touch (when drunk), these people. Why add someone who you thought was cool in the game? Thats NOT a friend. I only have 20ish, and these are REAL people i know. Heck, most of the time i only chat to them while playing a different game, or, if lucky, get 4-5 at the same time willing to play the same game, but the only one we all own is Halo 3....

Also don't see the point of 100 "friends". If I game with someone semi-regularly, he's on my list. If not, no way.

As a reminder, there is also the "last played with" tab on the friends screen. You don't need to add someone to your friends list unless you plan to play with them again. Just looking for someone you played with yesterday? Go to the "last played with" tab. Easy...

Still, fact remains that this is a limitation. And why would you want to be so limited?

E said in Major Nelson's Pod Cast it's due to Xbox 1's limited friends list to 100 in specific games like Halo 2 and there not sure what would happen. I guess there experiment now..I guess Friends of Friends does help keep track of people if you can't fit em on your list.
