Microsoft Unbanning Wrongfully Banned 360s? *update*
Posted by XanTium | December 18 20:39 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From zdnet.com:
The other day I reported that I was getting emails in from disgruntled Xbox Live users who had been banned by Microsoft for allegedly connecting to the online service using modded consoles even though the consoles were totally unmodified. Today I'm hearing that some of those affected are finally getting somewhere with tech support.

Initially, Microsoft's response had been that the process used to identify modded consoles (a process that would allow the console to play backed up game) was 100% accurate and that there was nothing that Microsoft or users could do other than buy a new console. At the time Microsoft wouldn't even take the consoles in to be checked or repair. Now is seems that things have changed. I'm still waiting for official word from Microsoft but according to several affected gamers that I have spoken to, Microsoft is now backing down from the initial stance and some consoles are being unbanned and others taken in for repair.
*update*
Looks like microsoft can officially *unban* a console!
forums.somethingawful.com

The thread above is about a upset consumer who claims he had a unmodified system and got a ban. After some upsetting calls to MS, and several supervisors, he got his case escalated. Apparently after a few days, he was able to sign on live again! Strike one for MS, looks like their super robot 100% fullproof ban hammer is a flimsy inaccurate banana.

I urge all users whom were banned to call and throw a fit, get your case escalated and see what they will do! The proof is in the pudding, and you can eat it too!

Ha. Oh Microsoft. You can't be 100% confident in the accuracy of anything. Glad to see they're getting it fixed. Kinda.

This has been reported on several online forums, most notably perhaps, somethingawful.com's general boards.
I called bull immediately, but now I don't know. If they really did unban unmodded consoles, good god man...

Entirely correct.

I had my 360 RROD last Monday (10th), I called them up and their hardware division REFUSED to fix my box because they claimed it was flagged as "modified" on November 23rd. This is a load of crap as my warranty sticker is still intact and I have never tried to modify the console. Funny thing is the xbox live division said my console was NOT banned... go fig eh?

So yes, Microsoft did unjustly ban people from XBL and I do feel they owe us poor guys an appology.

Just called support, they said that there is nothing that they can do for a banned console. They also didn't seem to care when I told them of all of the purchases I had made on the marketplace and the points I had remaining. I call bull on this.

hm, heres my theory

if they actually did start unbanning consoles, it's more than concidence that the new bans were just last weekend, they obviously found a more accurate way to identify modded consoles, and this allows them to backtrack on the consoles they banned wrongfully before, i guess this was already common knowledget hough

Ahhh, glad to see the "guilty until proven innocent" policy is in full effect at MS. I never knew they were banning people unjustly! It kind of sucks though they are so paranoid of piracy...I do think they should take measures to protect the content that is published on their console but wehn it starts to affect the general population of users who don't even know anything about modding is just plain wrong.

Nice that some people are getting this fixed!

So if they unban some consoles, they should be unbanning any console because they were not 100% accurate in their detection, meaning that they should unban all people.

wouldnt that be like letting all killers out of jail because one was pardoned or was wrongfully accused? Or not "interrogating" any terrorists for information because one person wasnt actually a terrorist? They probably will sort it out some way but just a wide un-banning is not likely the answer.
Somehow banned people who think they should not be banned could be allowed to sign into xbl to undergo a new test or something to check for validity. Like WGA on windows....Ughhh...all this crap is very annoying! Glad i've never been banned.

Id imagine this new wave was when they misjudged their banning of consoles, perhaps just the past few waves of people.
