Microsoft Announces New Xbox 360 Points Gifting System
Posted by XanTium | December 24 13:09 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hryb, better known as Major Nelson, has revealed as part of a new post in his popular weblog that Microsoft is offering an Xbox 360 Points gifting system, currently U.S. only.

Now, when purchasing Microsoft Points online at the official website, users may also elect to gift points to other U.S. users, using the recipient's Windows Live ID (not their Gamertag).

I thought this was pretty nifty...

Until I saw the part about having to know their windows live ID.

How the hell are you supposed to know someone else's "windows live ID"?

Nice...though I like the idea of having a DVD case (with nice cover etc) and a redeem code card makes it all the more personal.

As always, the best offers on the Internet are US Only.
But hey, everyone knows the world outside the US, Canada and the UK pretty much doesn't exist.

LoL it might have something to do with MS being an American company you know and things would launch there first. Once/if successful it will get here eventually.

So has anyone tried buying some for their US account, and gifting them to their real one? Seems a nice way to get around the region-locking.

Sounds like a bad idea that could lead to theft.

Thats Funny. Nintendo already did this in there Wii Shop channel. But instead you can actually gift them a virtual game, not Wii Points. I like that M$ offers Live Points only, and then the other party can decide what they want, but come on. The way I see it is that M$ is falling fast.

I guess that you could always message someone and ask them their e-mail address. Even if you were trying to make it a surprise, asking someone for the MS e-mail address related to their Live account wouldn't automatically give you away.

One benefit of this system is for someone that wants a small number of points for a one-time purchase, doesn't have a credit card, and doesn't wany to buy $20 worth. They just pay their friend w/ the credit card. Or if someone says "we should play this arcade game online together, here I sent you the points to buy it". I think that it's a pretty good idea.

I think this could be a very cool feature for live... The gifting feature could be used in many different ways.
You can use it as a gift like advertised.

Or Depending on the Increments of points they let you give at one time, say your friend wants that awesome new expansion pack for 1000 Microsoft points but he only has 800/900 I could Just give him those extra 100 points I have been sitting in my account for the longest time and then he can buy it.

I am not sure how the actual system works but there are many issues which may lead to abuse and things.
Hopefully the system doesn't work by having to purchase points in order to gift them... I.E. I want to gift 500 Points to Jimmy, So Instead of using the 500 points I already have, they will make me go and buy a New set of 500 that will exclusively be gifted to Jimmy. I hope it doesn't work like that.

But It sounds like a pretty cool feature and just one of many that have made Xbox Live such a magnificent experience for me over the years.
