A leaked internal Microsoft memo apparently sent by head of the corporation's Games division, Don Mattrick, to his employees, states that the Xbox 360 is on course to become the next-generation console winner.
Are you freaking serious!?!?! Don sent that out? Well, no company would ever tell their employees they were doing good (to boost employee moral, promote goals, etc) if it weren't true....
Not saying the 360 isn't doing much better than the others, just that a company memo stating one of the most standard things any company will say to their employees (especially in memo form) IS NOT NEWS.
There's no facts.
There's no story.
It's not even on real paper. It's a memo of encouragement, and is probably the lamest news I've seen on x-s.
So what's next? News about MS employess stealing pens from the office, or maybe taking an extra 30 minutes for their lunch break?

This is all the same talk that MS claimed with the Xbox and we know how that ended up. Attach rate higher. Lets see 5 games per console at 12million units = 60million units whereas ps2 was 4.5attach rate at 100million units = 450 million units. All it proves is that the Xbox and its sister the 360 are truely for the hardcore gamer which is a niche market. But then again MS does have to convince their investors that the 360 may turn a profit someday

You're failing to take into consideration that the PS2's installed base of millions of units (which should still be under 100 million, iirc) are at two totally different points in a console's life (the 360 is 2 years old, the PS2 is 8).
Wouldn't it be fairer to consider either the console with the most raw power, or with the smallest niche market the console for the "hardcore" gamer? The 360 is clearly ahead of the Wii & PS3 in installed base, and has been said (don't know if it's true, though) to have 90 % of it's potential already tapped in some games...

Since microsoft will probably use the same manufacturer in the next xbox they wont have the backward compatability problems they had with the 360. If the next xbox comes out with full backwards compatability with the 360 your point is mute.
Hell they don't even have to come up with a new machine really, just update to high capacity disks faster memory and all that and have it run the same code just faster. This is all speculation of course but they could go a great number of ways and are in no way in a corner.
The people at microsoft really have left there options open this time around and have created a console that sells games like they are goin out of style and that is what really matters.
They really do have a shot to win this time around.
Whether or not Microsoft uses the same manufacturer has little to nothing to do with future backwards compatibility. It's simply going to be based off how the console is designed. Will the hardware run the old discs, or will they use software emulation, or a combination of both? Time will tell, but I assure you that if it's written in the schematics, the manufacturer will be sure to include them in the product.
Updating a machine to higher capacity discs and faster memory alone would NOT be a new console. It would be an Xbox 360 with a new ODD and faster memory (which probably wouldn't be noticeable to anyone playing). Generally when a company makes a *new* "system", the processor should be more capable all around, more RAM than the previous version, graphics processor that can dwarf the previous generation's GPU in at least several aspects, and countless other revisions to ensure system stability, efficiency, and performance. Sounds more like you're only suggesting a revised 360, which may or may not fall victim to the RROD, and will run nothing more than xbox 360 code. They have already done this, and dubbed it "Falcon", and then did it again and it was dubbed "Zephyr". I believe "Jasper" is the next one.
Also, the word is "moot", and not "mute"
