Would it matter to Xbox 360 gamers if HD DVD died?

From xboxer.tv:
[QUOTE]
Personally though, I don't seem to bring myself to care. Perhaps I'm in the minority, but the idea of turning my games console into a jack of all trades multimedia monster never really appealed to me. I accept that having extra features available are welcome as a convenience, but to be honest, I don't think it would make any difference to whether I'd want to buy the console or not. I'd want to buy it on the strength of its games library, rather than its ability to browse the web or download TV shows.

As far as the gaming capabilities of Blu-ray go, while it does give the PS3 hardware a boost, power of hardware doesn't correlate with quality of games. The PS2 was the best console of the last generation because of its fantastic games library, despite the original Xbox being a more powerful machine and packing in a hard drive. The victory of Blu-ray would be by no means a good thing for the Xbox 360, but in the long run, the console battle will be fought with games, not hardware.

HD-DVD hasn't mattered much at all to XBOX360 owners. HD-DVD dying won't changes much. imo.

I don't think it matters that HD-DVD is dying imo. But I do think a BD-Rom addon or a Blu-Ray equipped 360 console would be a great idea. I'm sure there is quite a few people who are undecided about which console to buy, and may use the BR feature of the PS3 as a deciding point. I know one of my friends doesn't know which console he wants to buy yet, but he's leaning towards PS3 because of the built in Blu-Ray.

the PS3 as your only BR player? that would suck. i remember my PS2 as my only dvd player. it broke in a few months. then after that, it needed adjustments every couple of months. any game console as your only dvd, hd-dvd, blu-ray player, is not a good idea imo. i would buy what ever gaming console i want, because it has the games i want. not wheter it will play br or hd dvds. id buy a standalone player for that purpose.

Not everyone feels like needlessly spending several hundred extra bucks for a standalone unit. But the PS3 is a far better Blu-Ray player than the PS2 as a DVD player. Also, the PS3 is a lot better built than the PS2. Worst case scenario I'll just use my PS3 to play Blu-Ray movies until standalone players become a lot better and cheaper in price. Truth is I'm more worried my 360 will break 5 times more before my PS3 ever will (I'm not referring to usage either). wink.gif

i bought my 360 to play games on it not to watch movies on it although when they introduced the HD DVD drive I went out and bought it but i like that because I had a choice of weather or not I wanted it.. Sony fanboys will be quick to say that I already payed as much as the PS3 and am still missing built in wifi etc.. but the fact is 360 has the best games right now and I don't see that changing this gen..

The PS3 is known as the best Blu-ray player on the market right now and it doesn't have the issues of the PS2 much like the 360 doesn't have the reliability of the original Xbox.

i own both a PS3 and a 360. all im saying is that i simply dont want to risk my PS3 living a short life because of watching a few movies. Ive seen it happen with the PS2, original Xbox, and the 360. If you want to use it as your player then thats fine. I actually play a few BRs on it. but i try not too. I will definately buy a standalone BR player when the prices go down. I already sold my add-on 360 HD-dvd player.

I have a Xbox 360 for playing games, I have a standalone Hd-Dvd player to watch movies...I have a PS3 doing nothing because I dont play games on it because there are no good games out there and movies on a regular Dvd look good on my Hd Dvd player...

i tend to agree with the general article.

cause if you ask me, the bottom line as far as "gaming" is concerned makes ZERO difference if HD-DVD dies.

There is absolutely no proof that the PS3 will die quickly just because you watch a few BR movies on it. It is designed for dong both.
How can you enjoy something if you are afraid to use it in case it breaks. the cost of a standalone player will still me more than repairing the drive in the PS3 if anything went wrong.
If it worries you , I would simply subscribe to continuous play and have the PS3 covered for a small monthly payment.
Also your stand alone player may fail quickly if it is a cheap chinese made unit. The cheap DVD players are poor reliability wise.

I have 11 Blu-Rays right now. I don't really buy them unless there is something that demands the transfer (like heavy SFX or a 5 star movie). Otherwise, I'll just watch my DVD's on my Samsung 1080i DVD Player. I have a smaller HDTV (27"), so the upconversion looks pretty nice on it. By the time the Blu-Ray players come down to affordability for me, I'll probably have a 37" HDTV.

So, with that said, I don't really use my PS3 as a Blu-Ray player steadily. Just for those better movies that demands the HD treatment fully.

I bought my 360 for playing games, not movies. When I want to watch movies on my 96" screen (projector rocks) ordinary DVD movies is good enough for me. I don't play them from my 360 though but from the standalone dvd player in my home cinema setup.

I wont buy neither a HDDVD or a Bluray player in the near future, as I'm simply waiting for this format-war to pass before I decide what to get.
