Posted by XanTium | January 24 17:18 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft has announced the results of its second quarter, showing Xbox 360 and PC hardware and game sales up $115 million over the year prior, as the company sees overall sales of $16.37 billion and operating profits of $6.48 billion.

The overall results are a 30 percent rise in sales and 87 percent rise in operating profits. The company's entire Entertainment and Devices Division, which houses Xbox 360 and PC gaming as well as Zune and set-top devices, saw a 3 percent rise in revenue to $3.06 billion, and $357 million in operating profit, up from losses of $302 million the year prior.

Microsoft notes that it shipped 4.3 million and 6.1 million Xbox 360 consoles in its second quarter and first half, respective, compared to 4.4 million and 5.4 million the year prior. It adds that life to date sales of Xbox 360 has reached 17.7 million units, up 70 percent from the prior year.

"$357 million in operating profit, up from losses of $302 million the year prior."
That is a pretty sweet turnaround! Sounds like they're finally headed in the right direction.

LOL... mine too. But honestly, if they're making so much they need to invest a little of that back into fixing the issues with live and their newly found audience.

This isn't exactly a poor company we are talking about here. They could have fixed the issues they're having looong before they came about.

You see my signature? That should mean the best possible experience in online gaming. If I'm having problems, I know others are.

You're playing the should've, could've, would've game...any idiot can look back with 20/20 hindsight and say what should have been done. That ability isn't very impressive.

The fact is NOBODY really knows what will actually happen until it happens. Just because Microsoft has billions doesn't give them any more clairvoyance in predicting technical problems then you or anyone here..

Really? Because I seem to remember my professors teaching consider future expansion when planning networks in my networking classes. If their business model says X number of people will buy 360's this Christmas season, then our network should be able to support X+Y connections.

True, nobody REALLY knows... but that's not an excuse for Google or Yahoo. In the telephone industry, if your network fails you must answer to the FCC for the disruption and then people get fired.

yeah, XB Live is a joke, just look at the problems with the free game giveaway. You can't tell me that they couldn't have planned for that. I still have problems trying to log in from time to time during high usage times.

Did anyone notice that they threw PC hardware into the statement? I wish they would have left it to Xbox related things only. Something tells me that its still not as peachy as they want us to believe...

something tells me they are not factoring in their billion dollar write off.

Yeah any joker can look back after the fact and say "You should have wore a condom while getting it on with that dirty $5 hooker" but how was I supposed to forsee that she would be all disease infested?

Some things are obvious in hindsite but not easy to forsee... but somethings are just common sense...

They had the forsite to ramp up production and shipping for holiday sales, yes somehow not the foresite to prepare for those sales to log onto their much touted Live service?

There's a hole in that logic...

I remain amazed that a company can charge a premium for their expertise in providing a service (I mean that must be what we are paying for as the equivalent exists for free out there in many other forms) then fail and stilll garner support from the very customers it just fleeced...

Something about this statement seems a little fake. Last year they reported annual figures and announced 10,4 millions consoles shipped, this time they announce 17,7. but still claim that they shipped more this year and even say they shipped 9,8 million consoles. What gives?

Fantastic to know that PC Gaming is on the rise, just got a new rig and its plain sexy. Huge downside to PC Gaming is that 80% of games publishers and developers say they are forced onto consoles or to multi-platform due to piracy. I know there will always be a PC Gaming scene, but i don't want retards with bit torrant to spoil it

Oh, and good on Microsoft. Thanks for Undertow!

Micrsoft could easily avoid all this scrutiny and bad press by just making the service free! then nobody would complain about down time cause it is free what would you expect. Then we could have a really crappy service but no reason to complain. I would like to see what plays out with the free services once they hit critical mass like XBL has, that is if they ever do. I mean come on can you imagine if psn had over 6 million members what would it be like managing that as a free service.

hehe i do agree tho that if we are gonna pay for it then it better work! biggrin.gif
