EA expects PS3 to outsell 360 in 2008
Posted by XanTium | February 4 13:45 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamesindustry.biz:
[QUOTE]
Electronic Arts has released estimates of what it thinks will be the range of hardware sales in North America and Europe through 2008, and while the Wii unsurprisingly leads, it's the PlayStation 3 that will hold a strong second place.

That will, according to the estimates, be particularly true in Europe, where EA expects the PlayStation 3 to sell between 5 and 6 million units across the year, compared to just 1.5-2.5 million for the Xbox 360.
That means that while the company thinks the two will tie in North America on 4.5 to 5.5 million unit sales, the two sets of numbers combined give Sony's flagship console a compelling 3.5 million lead.

Combined console estimates for 2008 are as follows:
Nintendo Wii: 12-14 million
PlayStation 3: 9.5-11.5 million
Xbox 360: 6-8 million
PlayStation 2: 3.9-4.9 million

Highly possible as 360 sales have been so good it is bound to reach a levelling off point whilst PS3 sales have still to kick into gear, given that the console is much younger.

If Blu-Ray finally delivers a knockout punch and MGS4 and other AAA titles hit PS3, i can see this happening easily. The PS3 looks more attractive everyday, for its a great deal for the price of the console, but it just lacks the line-up right now

Save this thread and mark my words. By the end of this so called console race the PS3 will yet again be on top with total consoles sold.

Not to say anything bad about Microsoft. They have done leaps and bounds above anything they could ever have done with the Xbox 1 and it is by no means a failure but as for future proof the PS3 stands out in spades.

The PS3 sales will continue to rise over the next 5 or 6 years.

Hmmmmm,

This can only be a good thing- a higher installed userbase theoretically should entice publishers to invest more time/money spent on development and polish, resulting in higher quality titles.

Still don't own a PS3 yet but it's only a matter of time.

I can.

Like it's been said, once MGS hits, the sales are sure to increase. Probably as well with Killzone 2 and Grand Turismo. Plus the lower price. But their special ace-in-the-hole is the 3 Red Lights of Death. People have been shying away from the 360 because of that. The high failure rate has been a huge thorn in MS's side.

I'm not a fanboy of either console. I like them both equally. But, I really feel MS dropped the ball since even newer 360's are still getting the RRoD after even changing to cooler running GPU's.

Microsofts need to do something NOW! if they don't, i'm sure they will lose everything they have fought for.

Xbox 360 sales in europe, are the same than PS3 sales in USA! LOW!

I don't think EA is even close. Sony's sales get *worse* every month, not including November and December, since everyone's sales skyrocket in those 2 months. I don't think MGS4 is going to sell that many units, most people that want MGS4 already have a PS3, and have been waiting for it for a long time. Oh, and it'll probably be announced for Xbox 360 before it's released anyway.

As Blu-ray starts to become more popular I can see PS3 sales increasing and probably match if not overtake Xbox in main land Europe. I don't see Xbox sales slowing down as a result though since thats the console most will still buy for gaming.

Amazing that someone can forecast sales like this without taking into consideration the form of all three major consoles. I agree that the PS3 will collect momentum, but we're a long way away from it beating the 360. As for the infancy of the PS3, this is now irrelevent. It's been around for over a year in the US and almost as long in Europe. It's not as if people are fighting over them - go into any shop in the UK and they'll either have stock or know when the next lot are coming in. The only way you'll see a massive uptake is if the price is lowered to sub £200. That's where the competition is and that's where Sony needs to be. Hell, I might even buy one at that price, if I can find a good 3rd party controller since the official one sucks donkeys.

People will more and more start to see that what you get for the 399$ ps3 is a lot more then the 360 pro and even more then the Elite.

Just think about it, 1st party titles that cater to a larger user base, the same multiplat titles. Wifi, rechargeable Controller, Bluray, free online, plus its silent and so far seems alot more reliable.

Its a steal at 399$

So I agree with EA, Sony will sell more consoles 2008 then MS. (and they already are).

But it won't be because of any game, but for its better value and stronger brand.

I agree, only a few things that are stopping me from picking one up, with most importantly that lame controller designed for the 'little handed japanese'. I also don't like the trayless disc drives. One dirty disc spreads the dirt to all of the prestine discs. I also think that it was a stupid move to dump the backwards compatability from the newer models (and probably all future models). I don't see the PS3 dipping below the $400 mark this year, while it seems totally plausible for the 360 pro to hit $300 for the GTA4 release. The MGS series never really did anything for me anyways, so maybe I really don't want a PS3 after all...
