Need Help, noob, not to tweaking stuff how i like it, but to psp Options

I need some help. Everywhere I go to get help in forums I get yelled at. I read how to install custom firmware then get yelled at for asking a question. I don't want to pirate anything. I get accused of that a lot. I just want to do something different with the psp I got 3 years ago.
I do not know anyone who has a 1.5 fw psp or a psp running custom fw. Is it so bad that I want to downgrade my firmware to try all the things everyone else is talking about. I'm not stupid at all but I just don't understand a lot of this. Give me a MOTOrolla and I'll mode the bjesus out of it. I understand things like flash/flex/firmware and such.
