Microsoft takes step towards portable Xbox with Danger purchase
Posted by XanTium | February 11 21:39 EST | News Category: Xbox360

[QUOTE]
With Microsoft's announcement today to buy cell phone software maker Danger Inc., the deal may not only strengthen the software giant's position in consumer mobile phones and strengthen defenses against Google's Android platform, but also mean a new addition for gamers.

The acquisition will provide more applications to Xbox through existing Danger services, Microsoft said. However, the possibility of a portable Xbox arises from Danger's wide range of software, which can be made capable of playing some Xbox games, with the company's gadgets used as the foundation for a portable gaming device capable of making phone calls.

On one hand I'm pretty eager to see what MS could do if they truly put there resources towards building a handheld game system/cell phone. But on the other I wish they would work on improving and perfecting there current services and products into a more streamlined and reliable state.

I'm starting to think MS may be trying to bite off more than it can chew. What do they stand to gain by going against Apple, Google, and possibly Nintendo/Sony so directly and all at one time? I doubt its because they feel they aren't financially stable enough. But why not one at a time with great products....and build momentum off of each success?

i don't really think that a "portable gaming device that could make phone calls" would work and/or sell well at all unless the phone service was not contract-based. however, it would be nice for MS to release a portable gaming platform with zune capabilities and still keep to a respectable size...although i doubt that anything will get close to replacing my iphone any time soon, except the next iphone...

still the purchase of danger opens up a great opportunity for future product development...
