Apple has filed a request to extend the Apple trademark to "toys, games and playthings, namely, hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games; stand alone video game machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only; LCD game machines; electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games."

Does this mean we'll see an Apple Entertainment System, capable of doing the same as a 360, but costing twice as much? No doubt someone will buy it. After all, Apple have done really well at selling shiny stuff for way too much money.

i cant see a gaming console being made by them. not one that can contend with Nintendo, Sony, and MS in any generation of games....that is unless they make an absolute beast of a system that would attract developers who would make some worthwhile games for it. other than that i dont see much coming from this. if anything they'll more than likely realize it would be a bad idea to enter a market with veteran companies who know what to do and have established names. where as apple doesnt.

I can see it now. Tons of brainless people lined up to buy the shiny new apple gaming system. Its a steal at only $1,200 and you get to choose your color!!

If this happens i have the feeling that is over priced system is just gona dominate everything.

*sigh*

If apple makes a video game console, it's going to look real nice and classy. I wouldn't mind buying one....Maybe.

Thats about the most stupid statement...

The same could have been (and was) said about sony going against sega and nintendo. Then MS entering the game was the same thing too.

I'm a Canadian whose legal expertise is limited to episodes of Law and Order, so I really can't say with any certainty. But perhaps Apple wants to make sure that they retain the rights to use their i-Phone for portable gaming, while at the same time wanting to impose fees if anyone else (Microsoft, Nintendo, etc.) does the same thing. The wording of that trademark extension is rather broad and vague, but I'm guessing that certain combinations of features (such as gaming and TV viewing and phoning from one handheld device) might be something that Apple can claim legal rights to. Or is my legal ignorance showing here?

stupid?? i think not. Sony had knoweledge of the video game industry through working with other gaming companies well before even releasing the original playstation. as did Microsoft before releasing xbox 1. they werent considered a major player in the game by the media and gamers in general, cause both of their premeire consoles were a first for them in the major retail sense. you didnt hear Nintendo or Sega laughing or shrugging them off like they were nobodies, cause they knew they had a problem then. this is what you are referencing. media and people in general mocking and laughing at newcomers at their times.

Apple hasnt even touched on projects dealing with other game companies or developers with making hardware outside of their own line. they dont have much of a background in the sense of making games and gaming consoles. and dont argue their computer lines. that's a completely different thing altogether. so are the chips they probably sell to Nintendo, Sony, and MS for use in their consoles.

bottom line is they got an absolutely poor background when it comes to this stuff and frankly i cant see game developers flocking to a company that isnt known for this sort of stuff if they do release a console to compete with Nintendo, MS, and Sony.

Well, Apple did come out with the iPhone, uncharted waters afaik. I would certainly welcome some innovation in the gaming arena. Compared to Sony and Microsoft, I like Apple's marketing, and their stocks are worth more too. I don't see anything bad about it....besides, they haven't even done anything yet. Let's just see what they do before acting like it's going to ruin everything.
