8bitjoystick: Buying a Used Xbox 360 is Worse than Used Underwear
Posted by XanTium | February 13 16:58 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From seattlepi.nwsource.com:
[QUOTE]
I've always been a fan of buying used video games and used video game systems. Since most games are only published and printed for a limited amount of time and each video game hardware system is only made in a limited amount for a limited period of time getting buying used stuff is often the only way to find anything older than a few years. However there is no way that I would ever buy a used Xbox 360.

Customers simply have no way of knowing what that system has been through and the state of the internal hardware. Since the Xbox 360 has design issues, parts supply, manufacturing and hardware repair problems there is no way that you can rely on getting a reliable system. Unless you know how an Xbox 360 system has been treated, used of if it's had any previous hardware problems. There is no way of knowing if it's been repaired once or a dozen times. Buying it from GameStop,Game Crazy, Ebay, Craig's List it is all the same. Places like GameStop will only test to see if an Xbox will boot up once or twice while they are deciding to accept it but they have no idea how reliable it is going to be in the long term. Getting a "repaired" system back from Microsoft is almost just as bad from getting one from a used lot. I would never ever buy a used Xbox 360 system and I think that places that sell used Xbox 360s are not being responsible to their customers.

This guy's an idiot.
Anyone who buys a used modern console such as an X360 or a PS3 is a cheap idiot.
Ok I'll be nice, a cheapy who likes to gamble....

Funny, I was just thinking about this earlier today and how I would never buy a used 360. And this is all due to poor design and you'll never know when the thing will crap out.

I totally disagree! I have bought many, many used 360's and had no problem getting MS to fix them if/when they broke. All you need is to make sure and get the original purchasers name and address so you can change over the console registration into your name and your set. With MS having the 3 year warranty I would not hesitate to buy any number of used consoles for the right price.

what a moron, I actually tell people to go out and buy broken system having done this myself. For 80 bucks shipped I got an xbox360 RRoD sent it in and with in 3 weeks had a working one. This was 5 months ago and still runs strong. You take a risk when ever you buy used electronics but what piece of electronics is going to come with a 3 year warranty that is redeemable with no sales slip and not the original owner.

Is this guy an idiot? Thats what you get for buying second hand stuff, you know there is likely to be a problem with it. Sure older systems are less likely to have problems because they are less powerful, and the X360 and PS3 are more prone to heat problems and so forth. You should expect this, when buying second hand.

I agree with this guy.. there are people that are able to remove the warranty sticker without damaging it, for all you know it may look like it's never been opened but it's been opened and that warranty you thought had is gone.

Agreed, buying a second hand system from a reputable seller should be just as safe as buying new. In most instances this is true and I would have no problems purchasing any other console that has been used. However, I wouldn't touch a used 360 with a ten foot pole.

Even new machines aren't safe. Many people buy a new system, put their broken one in the new box then return it for a refund. The shop then puts it back on the shelf ready for the next unsuspecting, honest customer. I had someone bring me his recently store bought 360 for flashing a few weeks back. On opening the console I saw it had been badly de-x-clamped and was a complete mess. The thing didn't even have a warranty sticker but was sold to him as new. I told him to take it back and demand a refund but for some reason he decided not to. Two weeks later he called me up to tell me it had died.

Just be careful folks, there's alot of screwed up 360's in circulation.

You know what realy irritates me about stories like this? They're completely one-sided. He doesn't know what that used 360 has been through, but can he say he knows how other used systems like Wiis, PS3s, PS2s, or DS's have been treated? I wouldn't think so. To me this is just someone ragging about getting a bad system.

It's not rocket science huh.gif The 360 is a pile of unreliable garbage that breaks all the time. When they break, dishonest people do a dodgy/temporary fix and then sell them to their local game shop.

This likely happens with other consoles but as they are more reliable the scale will be much smaller, thus reducing your chances of buying somone elses crap.

if you get someone at MS-support who has a good day, then you actually don't even need the original purchasers name and address. happened to me, was very lucky. cool.gif

exactly!
bought a RRoD360 on ebay along with two old xbox1, pimped these a bit (you know, softmod and so on), sold them again on ebay, so i got the RRoD360 for "free".
sent the RRoD360 to MS without the need for all the previous user data (lucky me, see above) and got it repaired (RRoD and broken ODD) for free.
as it is my modding system and it still runs, i do not have the feeling that this was dumb in anyway.

stupid guy.

good night,
