(USA) Microsoft about NPD's January Numbers
Posted by XanTium | February 15 15:26 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamerscoreblog.com (FYI: MS owned blog):
[QUOTE]
Today we have an update from NPD on console, accessory and software sales for January 2008 and it demonstrates that whether you are a consumer, retailer, or a publisher there is no better platform for games than Xbox 360.

Xbox 360 experienced a record-setting holiday that has not slowed down in 2008. NPD today reported that in January, Microsoft sold 230,000 Xbox 360 consoles. Our retailers are telling us that Xbox 360 is selling as fast as they can restock, but due to this high demand, Xbox 360 is experiencing temporary shortages. We are working as quickly as we can to replenish inventory.

Xbox 360 Owners Spend More on Games; Drives Industry Ecosystem
* In January, $297 million was spent on the Xbox 360 platform (hardware, software and accessories combined), compared to $244 million on Wii and $219 million on PS3. (U.S. NPD, January)
* $159 million was spent on Xbox 360 games alone in January compared to $131 million on Wii and $80 million for PS3. (U.S. NPD, January)
* Total customer spending on Xbox 360 life-to-date now reaches nearly $8.6 billion; this is more than double PS3 and Wii combined. (U.S. NPD, January)
* Six of the top 10 best selling games in January are on Xbox 360's platform. (U.S. NPD, January)
* After five months on the market, "Halo 3" continues to make the top 10 best selling games list according to NPD with 127,000 additional units sold in January. (U.S. NPD, January)

Games Play Better, Sell Better on Xbox 360
* "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" on Xbox 360 was the number one selling game across all platforms for the third month in a row. In January, the fourth edition of Activision's acclaimed war game sold more than 331,000 copies on Xbox 360 and outsold the PS3 version by more than 2:1. (U.S. NPD, January)
* Music fans love to jam on "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero III" on Xbox 360! The Xbox 360 version of "Rock Band" sold more than 172,000 units in January and ranked fifth on the top 10 best selling games according to NPD. "Rock Band" on PS3 failed make it into the top 25 list for January. (U.S. NPD, January)
* Third party publishers made 61 percent of their retail revenue, this generation, on Xbox 360 compared to 20 percent on Wii and 18 percent on PS3. (U.S. NPD, January)
* Xbox 360 has 83 titles with a Metacritic review score of 80 or higher compared to just 42 for PS3 and 14 for Wii.

Looking forward, Xbox 360 will continue to be the destination for the best games with powerhouse franchises such as "BioShock," "Call of Duty," "Guitar Hero," "Halo," "Madden," "Mass Effect," and coming in April, "Grand Theft Auto IV." Whether you are an experienced gamer or a family looking for a night of fun, Xbox 360 is today's preferred gaming experience, where everyone is invited to play.

"* Total customer spending on Xbox 360 life-to-date now reaches nearly $8.6 billion; this is more than double PS3 and Wii combined. (U.S. NPD, January)" Granted that the 360 has a year head start on consumer spending but if this is true then it is still very impressive. It would be impressive if they were even in consumer dollars spent with the numbers for ps3 and wii combined let alone doubling it.

edit: Keep in mind the ps3 higher price tag evens out the wii smaller price tag on the hardware side of spending.

Here are the NPD #'s for consoles sold for the month of january from PS3-scene if you're curious:

Hardware
Wii--274,000 units
PLAYSTATION 3--269,000 units
Xbox 360--230,000 units

Looks like they are all running neck n' neck in 08 so far.

Just love the spin these PR people put on stats. How about commenting on the sales in Japan or Europe? On-going failure rates? Nope.

What spin in particular are you talking about?. Why would they comment on Euro/Japan sales figures when the article does not include any and is only about US NPD figures?.

The spin in which microsoft is comparing gross revenue instead of gross profit. Microsoft may be taking the lead in the "amount of money customers shelled out" but in the end microsoft isn't making any more money than nintendo. Between the xbox replacements, disk replacements, taking a loss on the console itself, among other things, talking about gross revenue is pointless.

Exactly. None of these numbers are surprising. The Xbox 360 has a larger installed userbase, and a much larger library of quality titles, of course it's going to sell more software, especially on cross platform titles.

And there are a large amount of people who buy rechargeable batteries and charging cables for the Xbox 360 while they are already included with the PS3, and of course the Xbox 360 requires you to buy hard drive replacements from Microsoft, as opposed to the PS3 whereas you can use any hard drive. Who on earth would be surprised that Microsoft outsold Sony on high margin accessories?

It would kind of be like Sony bragging that they brought in more total dollars of revenue on hardware than Microsoft. laugh.gif

Except developers will definitely take into account these type of software sales and performance numbers and to me the developers are the ones who drive a console to success not necessarily the hardware itself but the games put out on it!

Hello Fellow Gamers. Exactly. I couldn't have said it better. The Developers look at the attach rate of games per console sales & also the game sales. The X360 currently is still top dog in total software sales in this country. The Wii is selling really great, but with no main 3rd party Killer titles to back them up then they're going to end up in really BIG trouble.

No Devil May Cry, GTAIV, Ninja Gaiden 2, Burnout Paradise, Soul Caliber 4, MGS4, etc..for the Wii. It's a shame that the Wii won't have these games. These games are the reason to own a console. Oh yeah, lets not forget the Online competition with millions of people world wide. Nintendo Wii still lacks; Online play (competition), Voice Chat, Custom in game music (in any game), Downloadable Demos, Ability to watch movies/Tv shows, etc.. The list goes on an on. Hell you can't even watch standard DVD movies or Divx/Avi (unless you mod the damn thing). It doesn't even have hard Drive storage. In this day an age, it should be an option to addon a hard drive for the Wii.

The X360 & PS3 are going to have some of the BEST 3rd party titles this year and next. If Nintendo don't do something about that very soon, they will end up in the same position as the gamecube. No matter how many systems of the Wii sell, it's the games that really dictate who will be on top.

The ps3 is a bluray player so it doesn't suprise me either. I bought my ps3 for bluray, because it was pretty much the same price as a standalone player, so you may as well get the ps3.

So out of all those ps3 sales, a good chunk must be using it as a bluray player foremost instead of a games console, which wouldn't help the attachment rate at all.
