GDC: 360 has sold 18m units worldwide
Posted by XanTium | February 22 11:56 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamesindustry.biz:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft's GDC keynote speaker, John Schappert, says that Xbox 360 has now sold more than 18 million units worldwide.
"I think that we've sold 18 million, the last time I've checked. 18 million hardware units worldwide," he told our sister site Eurogamer in an interview published today.

Schappert also hinted strongly that Microsoft would be unlikely to bother with a Blu-ray drive precisely because the HD-DVD add-on sold poorly.

Brilliant. Maybe the HD-DVD add-on did not sell well is because there was a format war going on. Now that the Sony bastards have won, I think many people (including myself) would want a Blu-ray drive.

yep...bring on the NetFlix announcement. I don't regret buying the HDDVD addon. It works great and every single HDDVD I've bought looks awesome. I'm just waiting for the stores to start clearing them out so I can grab some HDDVDs at bargain prices!

agreed, when the consumer pressure increases enough, MS will definitely produce a blu-ray drive for the 360. heck, if it was priced right, many people i am sure will gladly pick one up now...and the install base is already around 18 million according to this news...

Unless they've already had one in development it would take a minimum of 6 months to design, prototype, test and produce such a product... 9-12 months if they want it done right without any bugs.

Considering that we'll likely see sub $250 Blu-Ray players next holiday and that's the soonest we'd see such an attachment make the light of day if they started development now, it wouldn't be of any interest to MS to make one... there wouldn't be much profit in it at that point...

Not to mention this generation is now over the hill... The 3rd Xbox will being coming in 2010 or 2011 meaning you'll start hearing information and hype about it as early as next year. That's not a good market for an add-on drive.

Not to mention MS doesn't want to support either format really, they're only involvment in the war was to keep it going to make their own video marketplace more viable.... now that the war is over they're going to push their download services and blow off Blu-Ray.... Blu-Ray is not a DIRECT competitor to the Video marketplace... they're not going to do anything to help it along.

funny thing is that if they had the hd-dvd in the xbox360, they would have 18 million hd-dvd players in the hands of the consumers... ok, give or take since they are counting amount they sold to retailers. that is still more than the what 6mil ps3's (i could be wrong on that number) plus 1 mil blu-ray's.(still could be wrong)

funny story, the first dvd player i ever had was my ps2... maybe if they had the hd-dvd on the xbox360 i would have had my first next-gen hd whatchamacallit and i would have stopped buying dvd's.

ok... i ranted a little.

Yes, the HD-DVD drive sold poorly but did they think that maybe it sold poorly because people were still on the fence about which format to buy? Alot of people refused to buy either format simply because they didn't want to end up with a modern equivalent of a betamax. Now that the Blu-ray vs HD-DVD fight is over a blu-ray add-on may actually be viable.

Thats a very stupid statement from Microsoft. It's almost like saying - Were not bothering to develop a Blu-Ray add-on, so don't wait for it and buy the PS3 instead.
