Rumor: Xbox 360 HD DVD drive for 49.99usd?
Posted by XanTium | February 22 12:24 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From arstechnica.com:
[QUOTE]
Frank and I are having a good time at the Game Developers Conference, but when I began to write some gaming news and felt the knife at my throat, I knew I couldn't escape my shadow. The mole. He followed me to give me news.

"I have word on the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive," he told me. I swallowed. I didn't want to move. "On February 21, the price is going to drop to $49.99."

That's news?

They should be giving the things away, since in a few months they're practically useless

(Unless you just want to watch King Kong over and over)

Well if you had loads of HD-DVD's in stock inventory you would want to sell them of ASAP if the format is dead.

Anyway I'm gonna build up a massive cheap movie catalogue now all in HD-DVD (I don't have much of a DVD collection).

And I'm hoping down the line in a few years people will give them away to me free biggrin.gif

But I think we should beg to Toshiba to open up the spec it would be awesome to see what people on these forums can do.

as i saw on another board, someone said gamestop sold used HD-DVD players for 50 bucks, prolly 34.99 if this happens.

prolly kills the 5 free when you buy it used though... not like it would have been used much.

there are still some exclusive HD-DVD titles, and for a cheap enough price i will hold onto an extinct format player just to have one.

http://www.amazon.com/Best-HD-DVD-Exclusiv.../R22ANE10NK2MRT

some HD-DVD only titles making it worth the purchase?

um, actually the drives can and will have uses for years with playback for any HD DVD or regular DVD disk for both xbox 360 and PC playback...so that's not even close to useless at all...

I wonder if the scaler chip on the 360 upconverts regular dvds into whatever resolution you have selected, in the same way that it upconverts the games. It would only make sense, since the hardware is already there. That would make the 360 also a 1080p dvd upconverter, aswell.

With a VGA or HDMI output cable your Xbox 360 upconverts DVD WITHOUT an HD-DVD drive...

even with the drive if you don't have one of those video cables it wont up-convert.

so these add-on drives are useless for up-conversion.

It's just a USB drive. It wont make your dvd's look any better than just putting them in the 360.

And according to many of the 'trained eyes' out there, the 360 upscales dvd's like total shit.

Ive often wondered since Blueray and HD DVD both use blue lasers (or violet actually) would it be possible for a firmware change to convert a HD-DVD player to a Blueray player?
