MS Scrubs Signatures And Artwork Off Xbox 360 Case
Posted by XanTium | February 29 12:42 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From consumerist.com:
[QUOTE]
We read a lot of stories about companies doing boneheaded things but rarely do we read anything like what reader Nathanial sent in.

An avid gamer, Nathanial carried his XBOX 360 around to various events, collecting signatures and artwork from members of the gaming community. When his XBOX finally died, he contacted Microsoft to make sure that he could send the console in without having the exterior case replaced or damaged. Microsoft ensured him that his request would not be a problem.

Nathanial included (along with his XBOX) a letter explaining the markings on the case and requesting politely, but firmly, that he receive his original case back.

And he did.
Unfortunately, someone at Microsoft took it upon himself/herself to scrub the exterior of the box until the signatures were completely removed. This just seems spiteful. Trying to picture the person who thought that giving someone's signed XBOX a bath was an awesome idea makes our brain hurt.\

Sucks, but this kid should have known something like this might happen.

You can't actually expect a repair department as busy as MS's to actually take time to give a shit about a request like this, let alone pass the info around to every other soul that may or may not come in contact with the console.

He rolled the dice on this one, and lost. But yeah, I would still be heated about it. sleep.gif

That's funny as hell...imagine the worker in Mexico opening his RMA box and reading the letter.

"Dear Microsoft, please don't remove the signatures and make sure I get the original case back unharmed."

Translation to worker:

"Someone made my case dirty with their signatures, scrub very hard to make sure you can't see them anymore, k thanks."

I've had one of my 360's fail. I sent it in the UPS box and checked the web shipping status page the entire time. My unit arrived "at the dock" and literally 3 hours later I had a notice that a shipment was being returned to me. Having heard horror stories about long delays in getting things repaired, I thought maybe they rejected my 360 because the case was custom-painted black. Here they just simply sent me a brand new unit with a recent manufacturing date. 3 hours from dock arrival didn't seem like it would be enough time to make it to the testing bench to figure what was wrong.

See if that had been me, I would have removed my case, but then there goes my warranty. So either way he's playing with fire. Although I'm a firm believer in the X-Clamp replacement. I did it to mine, and it's been fantastic now for almost a year. Here's what I've done with mine.

-Bought on launch day.
-Did NOT purchase EB extended warranty plan.
-Voided warranty on launch day (I like to case mod) cool.gif
-DVD drive fw mod and preventative disc scratch mod
-Air vent mod some time later (divided the 2 fans tunnel so GPU would cool off better)
-RRoD 1 year and a half later after launch.
-X-Clamp replaced in about 2hrs time (with 30 minutes of tweaking to get it just right)
-My Xbox 360 working just like day one.

Had I not voided my warranty I'd be stuck with a stock 360, already once been repaired by M$ and ready to RRoD again. No thanks. If the X-Clamp replacement is done right I don't believe the RRoD will occur again.

If the value of the artwork and signatures was more than the console, then I would have just bought another 360. If I really wanted this repaired I would have taken my chances and sent it back in a different case.

What really sucks is that someone has obviously gone out of their way to scrub the art off - and they tell us they're too busy to speed up the return process!!!

I'm thinking about something here... If that 360 was one of the limited edition of 300 designer's box with actors signatures.... What would have happened?

Yea.... But someone some how all the free time to scrub sharpie off the case? Scrubbing the case has what part to do with the console repair? They pry the case off and set it aside, who took it upon themselves to clean the case? I mean what, they took it into the bathroom and ran it under soapy hot water?
