My Sharp TV has a smart stretch mode which stretches 4:3 video into 16:9. The center of the screen will remain in correct aspect ratio but the sides will be stretched. It crops out a bit from the top and bottom but not by a lot.

This seemed quite useful but I didn't quite this as an option on xbmc. I have set my xbmc to always output 720p so my TV won't be able a smart stretch on the 720p signal.

I guess it's a no. I can't imagine xbmc being so feature complete would leave this feature out.

I guess you only want the display stretched when playing a video?

Try pressing the Y button a few times during playback to cycle through various stretching methods. Not sure you'll find exactly what you want, but you'll at least see all the options.

I believe it's also possible to set playback to 4:3 via the video settings menu. In this way XBMC's menus will remain 720p, but when playing a movie your TV's own smart stretch can take effect.
