xbox 1.0
TSOP flashed with x2.4981.06
DVD-Rom Check was not an option.
Retail HDD
Evox dash

So I decided to mad a sammy 616 and screwed the flash on the drive. I'm still trying to fix that. But the problem is that I dassasembled the dead thomson for parts and now have no dvd for my box. It still boots without any DVD drive connected but I get a flashing green led and the boot sound 'stutters'. If I connect the sammy DVD drive It wont boot at all. Any Ideas why this might be? I dont really need the dvd-rom drive but it would be nice.

I suppose my real question is why does this box still boot without a dvd when the dvd-check was never disabled?

The stuttering is caused by the X-Box waiting for the DVD drive to respond. It's not there so the requests keep timing out (while it waits you get the short freezes).

Your BIOS is preventing the system from just throwing an error code (it'd be 11 by memory) but it's not stopping the console trying to talk to the phantom drive.

I know the X2 5035 has an option to disable the DVD drive entirely. The problem is it likely isn't safe to flash while your X-Box is stuttering.

First try hooking up the remains of your Thomson drive. It might be enough to make the console work long enough to flash. If that doesn't work, perhaps you could borrow a DVD drive from a friend. Otherwise, take a read through this and see if it helps.

Ahh.. Makes sense. I'm just gonna leave it how it is. Its been through enough. I'm actually starting to feel sorry for the thing. I just did a slim job on it with nothing but a razor knife. Turned out really nice.
