Aaron Greenberg also Say: 'no Blu-ray for Xbox 360'
Posted by XanTium | March 12 23:40 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From reuters.com:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft Corp is not in talks to include Sony Corp's Blu-ray high-definition DVD technology in its Xbox 360 video game console, an executive said on Wednesday.

"Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience," Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, told Reuters in an interview.
"We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content," Greenberg said.

Not in every country dufus.

Wake up to yourselves Microsoft and get Blu-ray for the 360. Swallow your pride, admit your mistake and move on.

That aside, the bigger problem for me is that even if you download a movie on Live, you still don't "have" it. If that HDD dies or your xbox dies altogether, your purchase is obsolete. I'd much rather own a disc that I could play in something else if I had to. If one of my DVD players dies, my movie collection isn't obsolete.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big proponent of digital distribution, but when it's shackled in DRM and stuck on just one specific device, it's basically worthless to me.

I agree with your statement, but if Microsoft finally pulls their head out of their ass, you know they'll never admit they made a mistake.

Actually, I'm not even convinced they will make a Blu-ray player. Nintendo didn't make a special add-on drive for the Wii and look how well that's doing (obviously, that isn't even an option... I'm just saying).

This is the main reason I don't download movies on Live unless I want to watch them once and then get rid of them. They use the DRM crap on the game downloads as well. Everything from an Xbox Live Arcade game to downloaded content for a game can be shackled to your particular console so you can't even take them with you when you go to a friend's house or use them on an other 360 you have elsewhere in your house.

Thar's just paranoid and stupid.

DRM sucks big time. Paranoia about piracy hurts consumers through garbage like DRM.

So basically you won't be able to play the latest HD movies on your 360

unless you buy them from M$'s own service

in a form that isn't even a hard copy

which on top of that is tethered to restrictive DRM bullshit?

You can never play the new HD movie DISKS that hit shelves

and THIS was supposed to be the all-encompassing media center?

Good luck tricking people into swallowing THAT.

I feel sorry for the idiots who will. (And the humanity that is screwed if morons end up the majority, as they often do. Let's just hope they don't coalesce into a single brainwashed SWARM that dooms entertainment by buying this crap.)

Hmmm, translated it roughly means "we will be bringing a bluray player out later this year or early next year"

They just helped me make my decision to buy a ps3 easier. I'll be picking up a PS3 for a nice cheap, upgradeable Blu-Ray player and I can play some games with it too.

I'm reallly interested in seeing some regular sales figures since the end of the format war up until the post christmas period.

I have this feeling that PS3 is going to increasingly out-sell the 360 as people adopt it equally for its BR and gaming credentials.

Eventually it has to hit a point where M$ will need to react and the obvious equaliser is to bolt on BR. Of course, I could be totally wrong! laugh.gif

Because the attachment rate was so low for the HD-DVD player. (3% to be percise) They just don't see it as profitable.

It has nothing to do with pride, otherwise Microsoft wouldn't be continuing work on Blu-ray players in Vista. It's all about profit.

Look, obviously MS is going to push digital downloads, they rake in more money because they charge a fee for live, no middle-man retailer to share profits with, and no royalties to pay. There is no 'used' market (since you can't sell/trade/borrow your movies) so they make more by selling more movies when some would be content just to borrow it and watch it once. There's no format shifting so you have to buy the movie again if you want to watch it on a portable (at least physical high def media has mandatory managed copy).

There is no add-on cost for their system so users don't perceive an added cost to the system and it allows MS to try to get the XBox 360 cheaper than the PS3 (although viewers suffer with the lower bitrates of digital downloads due to filesize constraints as).

They're only going to offer the drive as a last resort because the minute they do, users will see the PS3 as having added value, as opposed to just making do with the digital downloads.

Here's an idea, why not just try and please your customers, and at least give them the option of buying bluray add-on if they want? Otherwise people are just going to end up buying a low-end PS3 to play their movies because it's a pretty future-proof bluray player.

It is true that the attachment rate was very low, but that was also when there was a format war. Now that the format war is decided, I think the attachment rate would be significantly higher with a BR add-on. I wonder how the HD-DVD add-on attachment rate compares to the overall percentage of population that purchased a HD-dvd player for the home. I am guessing it is roughly around the same percentage if not, much higher than the stand alone purchases (in terms of percentages).

Funny that people were once complaining that Sony would over-DRM Blu-ray, yet they have a product that promotes you putting YOUR movies on the PS3, and you can watch your Blu-rays on your PSP as well. MS won't even let you take it with you without logging into live to execute it.
