PlayStation 3 Again Outsells Xbox 360 In February NPD
Posted by XanTium | March 13 22:17 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
For the second month in a row, the PlayStation 3 has outsold the Xbox 360, according to NPD's February North American hardware and software sales figures, as the Wii hardware and the Xbox 360 version of Activision's Call of Duty 4 again top the charts.

The hardware rundown is as follows:
Nintendo DS - 587.6K (from 251K)
Wii - 432K (from 274K)
PlayStation 2 - 351.8K
PlayStation 3 - 280.8K (from 269K)
Xbox 360 - 254.6K (from 230K)
PSP - 243.1K (from 230K)

The software rundown is as follows:
1. Call of Duty 4 (Xbox 360, Activision) - 296.2K
2. Devil May Cry 4 (Xbox 360, Capcom) - 295.2K
3. Wii Play w/remote (Wii, Nintendo) - 289.7K
4. Devil May Cry 4 (PS3, Capcom) - 233.5K
5. Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock w/guitar (Wii, Activision) - 222.9K

This will only continue from here on out. When it is all said and done the PS3 will be yet again the top console seller.

But it is by no means saying that the 360 was anything but a huge success. Just look at the market share it got over what the Xbox 1 did.

The 360's shortfall is the very thing that help it be a success to begin with. How ironic.

No it wont.

Those numbers were just the result of the "aftershock" of the end of the format wars, along with the PS3 price cuts AND the fact that 360 supplies have been low in the US for the past 2 months or so.

We now get a 360 price cut along with proper supplies.

So i predict that 360 will be back on top for the next few months (at least until Sony responds).

Also consider the fact that when GTA4 launches, the 360 arcade will the be cheapest way to play the game (one of the most anticipated of our generation).

I'm sure that the RLOD left and right had absolutely nothing to do with it either dry.gif.

Mine just went ring of death luckily I decided against the case fans and didn't open the console.

After this I hopefully will get a console with the new heatsink and I'll leave it closed until the 3 year RLOD warranty is over then if its still working I'll open it biggrin.gif.

Still waiting for that stupid box to ship it in I must say that the PS3 is looking more appealing from a durability standpoint.

Still waiting for some good titles on the PS3 though titles decide if I buy the console.

It is all cat and mouse. Whatever one side does the other will counter if sales drop. At some point it is inevitable that 360 will not sell like it has been doing.
It doesn't really matter who sells most as long as both survive and are supported well for some years to come.

i just dont understand why people think these sales are from wanting to play games and not because they want a blue ray player. Every time i see someone buying a ps3 in the store, they usually have a ps3 in one hand and a stack of movies in the other and no games to be seen. On the other hand i would of liked to see these numbers if blue-ray had lost.

MS really should tag up and bring a blueray player cheap for the masses... sell it at a slight loss. Then see how the PS3 stands up.

MS doesn't have too much to worry about imo.

The only reason PS3 is selling that well is because of Blu-ray. That's it. MS still dominates even the Wii in software sales & attach rate.

Once all standalone Blu-ray players are priced at the PS3's price or cheaper, PS3 sales will drop considerably. I know that won't happen anytime soon, but still...

MS is still killing Sony in terms of next generation gaming. Again, if Sony didn't have Blu-ray in the PS3, the PS3 would be dead in the water.

I agree with the cat and mouse comment and the competition is good so price drops will come. But I just don't understand what all the excitement is over a year old system outselling a 2 year old system by like 26k units? 0.o does that spell the end?

i don't see this as a big deal. i mean, the playstation brand is huge, everyone expected it to be a huge seller out the gate but it wasn't. sony has been working furiously to try to get it to sell. how many times has sony said, "no pricecuts" then a month later they cut it. how many different versions of the ps3 are there with different games included to different sized hard drives. sure there are a lot of SKUs for the 360 as the PS3 but the ps3 ones are cause sony is looking for a winning formula. ms does it because they wanted to offer 'choice' or so they claim ;p anyways, sales figures will go back and forth. i see the 360 getting a boost soon. rrod hype is dying down as people start to feel more comfortable with the hardware and once people realize bluray isn't all that great, welcome back to the games smile.gif

I'm thinking of getting one after HD DVD fell.....I will still play the majority of my games on the 360, but if a port title is better on the PS3, I will play it on there. This trend is likely to continue.

Actually most people blame the inclusion of blu ray for the delay in the launch of the PS3 and the high price. Without blu ray we might have seen a PS3 that launched near the same time as the 360 with a similar price point, and specs that would have made it look much better in comparison(60GB harddrive, Wifi, hardware BC, HDMI, free online play, etc...) who knows how things would have panned out then...

I'd say the playing fields just about even now. almost all new games are shipping on both platforms, on the same date, with little to no differences between them. And while the 360 has an edge in number of games new customers look ahead towards new releases, nobody's buying a 360 to get their hands on PDZ or Kameo.

Just from looking at those figures, I can assume that people arent buying PS3 to play games. Probably because its the cheapest, and upgradable BlurAy player.

sony just cut the ps3 prices ALOT which means when the 360 drops again they are in deep doo doo because i think sony would rather cut off their own nuts with a dull butter knife then drop price again in less then a year and also the 360 has no expensive drive which means they arent saying so but they could probaly drop a 100 no problem. there was a article a year ago saying the premiums cost was down to 325 id bet its 250 or less now probably at least. sony gives all this BS about cost reduction they didnt reduce the cost by no 100 bucks even with bluray helping out pop.gif
