BenHeck's New Single-handed Controller
Posted by XanTium | March 16 23:37 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From benheck.com:
[QUOTE]
Recently I was asked to build another one of the right-handed controllers, and I thought I'd talk about it on the site a bit.
This isn't the production model that I've been working on with eDimensional, you can read more about that here. But this is a refinement of a right-hand only design, similar to one I did last year.

Unbelievable. How the hell did he even fit the PCB in there? Did he have to modify that, too? It looks absolutely awesome. The only thing I would bring into question is the analog stick on the bottom. Wouldn't that be extremely hard to use?

Most of the stuff he does isn't really out of reach; he just goes about top notch quality in each step. I know for the 360 Laptops, he went to a place that did laser cutting. It's more costly, but looks professional. There's also some tuts on the forums here that involve cutting a controller and giving it a stock look.

If you go to his website you'll see that he took the original PCB and re-oriented it sideways then moved the analog sticks and buttons. The PCB fit's perfectly in the custom case.

Suppose if you were handicapped and forced to use only one hand, with a little practice, the analog stick on the bottom would eventually become second nature to use. I've seen some handicapped people do amazing things that non-handicapped people couldn't.

Ben Heck needs an award. Unless of course he releases the things for like $200, then we should shoot him.

But barring that, the guys a freakin saint.

$200 sounds cheap for a costum made controller. I believe it would cost more if you tried to make one yourself, a original cost something round $50 and if you mess something up you may need more then one. Doing this the first time I believe you would trash severall controllers. However if somebody like Joytech or logitech would make controllers they would make them from scratch, they wouldn't actually use an original controller because then the controller would be more expensive then the original. They could sell them cheap
because they would massproduce them. To make something cheap you have to massproduce, if they only made one XboX 360 it would cost Billions, the secret behind manufacturing cheap stuff is to make a lot of them. The more they make of them the cheaper they can be.

If Ben Heck would acctually make one to sell he would have to charge at least $200, deppending how mutch time it takes to make one. However if logitech would buy his prototype he could charge them $500.000 and they would massproduce it selling them for $45, however a lot of the technology inside is microsofts so he could acctually only sell them his design because the electroniks is already patented by microsoft. I believe that microsoft are the only company that could actually do something comersially with his design because it cost more to make electroniks to fit inside a design then to buld something around the electroniks.

I believe that some Company could build a Controller inspaired by his design without really using his design if the demand for Single-handed Controllers would be high. Then we could have a nice price on them. But till then I don't believe that Ben Heck would be able to make a living selling this controllers controllers for $200. Maybe if Ben Heck was a Chinese boy living in China but then I don't really believe he would afford an original 360 Controller to transform.

In other words you should consider yourself very lucky if he would build you one for that price, because it is really no bussiness for him doing that. So if you aren't a close friend with him don't hold your breath.

I am more than sure that the controller on the pictures costed Ben Heck more then $200 to build, I believe it is cheaper the second time because you have have a lot of demolished original controllers by now and it maybe is possible to make one that is ok out of all the broken ones. However the first always costs mutch because eveybody makes mistakes.....

With all that radical modification which has taken place on this controller, the one thing which caught my eye was the d-pad. Where is that from (would guess a PS2) and does it perform better than the stock? It certainly looks like it would.

Yes it is from a PS2, he mentioned this on his www. However he only wrote that it looks cool, he didn't mention how it performed. He also wrote it was something he already had so he tested it out..

It's fine using the 1st analogue stick on the top with your thumb but how do you use the 2nd thats on the bottom lol with your pinky?

Great work building it but I'd say its pointless to have or use except maybe for racing games and thats it.

Or how cool would it be having a N64 style 360 controller. I think thats the daddy of all controllers especially for first person shooters.

I believe the bottom stick is to be moved by pushing the controller against a surface, as most of the time the second stick is for looking around (wouldn't be too difficult)

if you read any of his postings on his site you would see that you use your leg to rest the analog on and move the joystick to use that analog.not simple but gives people with the use of one arm a chance to enjoy all the great fun we all get to enjoy while gaming
