I'm going to be replacing my aging CRT TV for a new HD display sometime soon, I want to try to reuse my existing 5.1 surround sound which has a optical audio input. Can I plug in an HDMI cable to my future TV, and run the optical audio cable to the receiver, or does the 360 only allow audio to pass through the HDMI when it's plugged in?

does your 360 have the HDMI out? if yes you certainly can. you can either spend 50$ on the MS hdmi kit, or if you have the compenent set still, crack the case of the component cable. shave down the hdmi and it should fit in. i can post pics if you want. they try to make it so you have to buy the HDMI kit, but there are ways around it like i said.

Thanks bud, I checked I see what ya mean with the original plug blocking half of my HDMI port, a friend of mine has the elite but no sound system so I think he has the kit you mentioned, that I should be able to borrow until I do something like the shave down you mentioned. Thanks again for the reply
