XBMC, a Google Summer of Code 2008 Project
Posted by XanTium | March 18 00:02 EST | News Category: Xbox

From xbmc.org:
[QUOTE]
XBMC is participating in this year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC), which means that we are looking for creative college students who are skilled in the C++ programming language and would be interesting in getting paid by Google to work on new features for XBMC this summer.

Google is this year sponsoring its fourth annual Google Summer of Code (GSoC), a program in which Google rewards students with a stipend of up to US$4500 in order for them to get involved and develop open source code for an existing and established open source project, such as XBMC. So if you are interested here is your chance, XBMC is a cross-platform multimedia-player for Linux, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, and the original Xbox game console.

The student application period starts on Monday March 24th and closes Monday March 31st, so be sure to hurry to sign-up and submit a project proposal by then, however there's no reason to wait for the application period to start before you get involved, so you can begin now deciding on an idea and discussing it with the team. To take part you are required to perform a small qualification task to make sure that you are prepared for your larger project. There is more information and some ideas for qualification tasks and projects on our wiki article for this years GSoC - see the link below. So get thinking about what you'd like to see in XBMC this summer that you may be able to help out on, and post on our forums about your idea for feedback from the team and the community!

That is sweet XBMC was selected! As soon as I am done with finals I'm going to start working on an application. It would definitely beat out my other summer jobs, lol.

I think it includes the versions for other platforms too like the Linux, Mac, and Windows ones.

XBMC Linux is in its infancy so I believe but I can see good things come of it, hell I still use it on my Xbox 1 loads even if my PS3 and 360 are capable media players I just like being able to put videos and stuff on my XBox 1 hard drive of nearly any video format type and with the MC360 skin it's awesome.

True, and my guess is that GSoC will probably mostly be focusing on the Linux port of XBMC this year (however the fact is that is totally dependent on the applying students), ...but as XBMC is now a cross-platform application so any new features or function improvements made to XBMC for Linux / Mac OS X / Windows can and will be ported to XBMC for Xbox, and vice versa.

This is indeed good news, lets hope we get some nice new functions within XBMC for the xbox. It would indeed be nice after all this time to see some good new features.

For those into programming, it also sounds like a nice offer google are doing and may attract some good programmers. smile.gif

"they" will never add dvr. we're adding frontend stuff (you can somewhat interact with myth already, and probably tvserver down the road). no need to reinvent the wheel

This is fantastic news!!!

A direct result of the devs hard work no doubt you should all be very proud of yourselves!!

Fingers crossed it also brings some nice features to the Xbox platform not just Linux port!.. (ie heavy code reliant on CPU/GPU power) I just cant stop using my Xbox!!!

Long live 733mhz and 64Mb of RAM!!! love.gif

Here's the delima: The xbox1 will never be able to fully support HD streaming due to processing power. Having an XBMC port to Linux or other OS will never(or the foreseeable future) be able to play xbox1 games. With that said, I hope both my xb1's with XBMC last forever.

6 year old. November 2001 was the North American launch.

What I would like done on XBMC:

I'd really like to see TuxBox improved so that set-top-boxes running Enigma (another Linux) can be viewed and recorded using XBMC.

Some work was done in this area but it is half broken and falls woefully short of the EPG built into the box.

It would be a stepping stone platform to XBMC supporting TV tuners directly.

Student application deadline less than a week away now...

FYI; Student applications are now available via Google. Please see http://code.google.com/soc/2008/ for information on how to submit your application, be sure to apply in time.
http://groups.google.com/group/google-summ...dent-applicants

Also, due to the almost complete lack of students who have publicly expressed an interest in submitting a proposal for XBMC to this years GSoC we will now also accept performing a qualification task for the FFmpeg project as a XBMC qualification task as well, see here for more information.

PS! Be encouraged by the fact that the qualification review period comes after the application submission deadline; i.e., you can work on a qualification task after you submit an application to XBMC through Google.

Student Application Deadline Extended

QUOTE
Hello everyone,

This year, we experimented with the program timeline providing one
week for students to discuss project ideas with their mentors and then
a single week to submit applications. We have heard feedback from the
community that it would be beneficial to provide more time for
students to submit their applications, so we've done just that.

The new deadline for student applications is Monday, April 7, 2008.

For full details, you can check out the program timeline. Please note
that our engineers are working on the required updates to both
http://code.google.com/soc/2008/ and the FAQs to reflect the extended
deadline, and we will post to this list when the changes have gone
live.

In the meantime, get those applications in and nag your friends to
apply. smile.gif

Cheers,
LH
