Best Buy to hand out 10M USD in gift cards to HD DVD purchasers
Posted by XanTium | March 19 12:58 EST | News Category: Xbox360
From tgdaily.com:
Best Buy today said that it will be sending out $50 gift cards to apparently more than 200,000 of its U.S. customers who purchased HD DVD players and Xbox 360 HD DVD units before February 23 of this year.
Best Buy is the latest company in line that wants to ease your pain (and quickly transition to Blu-ray), in case your high-def bets were placed on HD DVD. In prepared statement, the company's president and chief operating officer, Brian Dunn, said that "the DVD format war has divided our customers in a way we haven't seen since Betamax took on VHS more than 20 years ago."
In case you are wondering why Saturday, February 23 is the cut-off date: It is the end of the week, in which Toshiba announced to cancel HD DVD (February 19).
sounds like a great way to write off 10M on the taxes as the format is dead and sales will suffer from it in the end. Try to clear out the inventory as fast as possible and move on.

Wait, wait, wait.
I purchased my HD DVD addon from Best Buy about 14 months ago. But I don't think BB has my address in their computer. So will they still send me a coupon via my address tied to my credit card?

It probably is based off the best buy rewards program if I had to guess. I know they have my address from that. I got 300 bucks from reward points when I got my plasma tv. That was the only reason I even signed up for it lol. We will see what happens.

its cool they are doing this. they certainly dont have to. i just dont get why the hd dvds are still in the $25-$30 range when hd dvd is just about dead... doesnt make sense to me. still.. my gf bought my 360 hd dvd player add on thing, so im glad shes getting the $50 to a store that she'll most likely shop at for me!
