Sony Part Of Blu-Ray Patent Investigation
Posted by XanTium | 21-3-2008 22:49 EST
From gamasutra.com:
The U.S. International Trade Commission is reportedly looking into patent infringement allegations related to Blu-ray disc players and other products, and has included Sony in its investigation.
According to Reuters, the Commission has said its investigation encompasses "short-wavelength light-emitting diodes and laser diodes used in such electronics as handheld mobile devices, traffic lights and high-definition DVD players."
The investigation was reportedly precipitated by a complaint filed in February by Gertrude Neumark Rothschild, a Columbia University Professor Emeritus, who says that a variety of U.S. imports infringe on her patent and should be blocked.
But has she actually made something on them patents? If not then she doesn't really stand a chance against the Blu-Ray camp with the likes of Sony and Apple.

She seems to have developed the chemical processes used to create the diodes. It's not like she patented something vague like the concept of a non red diode in an electronic device.
Since the investigation is targeted at imported products, she more than likely has her patents recognized by US companies.
