Lite-On developing BD-ROM drives for Xbox 360?
Posted by XanTium | April 1 09:59 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From digitimes.com:
Lite-On IT is developing built-in Blu-ray Disc-(BD) ROM drives for the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console, according to industry sources. Lite-On declined to comment, citing client confidentiality.

Lite-On's shipments of the BD ROMs to Microsoft will start in the second half of 2008, the sources added. Lite-On is currently one of the suppliers of Xbox 360-use internal DVD-ROM drives.

Power supply makers also revealed that while the present Xbox 360 uses a 210-watt power supply, the next-generation game console will use a 170-watt power supply in order to reduce production cost and the size of the device, according to the sources.
Note: Yes, I am aware of todays date, but I don't think it's very popular in Taiwan where digitimes is based. Anyway it's a rumor, so take with a grain of salt. About the PSU, well that's no rumor but they got their timeline a bit wrong ... some Falcon (v3) 360s already ship with a 175W PSU compared to the old 203W PSU.

Built-in as opposed to an add-on???

I don't know... sounds dodgy to me.....

Unless they have found a way to implement HDi in Blu Ray (pretty unlikely) I will remain skeptical.

I'd def like to see an HD drive of some kind or another on the 360 tho

The thought of bricking a BluRay drive is very scary, though......

I'm not quite sure how M$ would implement the new drives if this rumor turns out to be true. I doubt they would put it in the arcade or premium skus, due to production costs. I don't think they would put it in the elite either, because that would mean there would be 2 very different versions of the same sku floating around. Maybe an xbox 360 ultimate?

I`m thinking the same thing, but like Xantium said, April fools prolly isnt as popular in Taiwan as it is here.
However, MS already stated they were not going to have a BluRay device.

If microsoft would sell a new sku, called let's say ultimate (the same title that said another user), they could put inside the blu-ray and sell it for the same price of the ps3 or a little less, and still have a profit on the console.

i think it's the way to go...

A new xbox bundle will confuse people even more,
And it is unfair that people who bought an xbox previously couldnt access the BR

If people think that MS will offer a new xbox with built in BR xbox sales will decrease even if the rumor is false.

I think the best is to clarify now the rumor and in case its true offer the addon to all customers, not built in

They don't have much of a choice. If they don't release something, they're going to fall behind. I for one would love to have an add-on drive for Blu-Ray, now that the war is over.

If MS can make an blu ray add on that is cheaper than going out and buying a blu ray dvd player. Then that would be the way to go. Blu ray is comming. There is no stopping it now. Just roll with the punches and make an add on and a packaged production xbox360 bluray. They both need to be done for MS to keep up...not only in game consoles but the world as it evolves. pop.gif
