Rumor: 360 Version Of Wii Remote Has Been In Development Since Summer
Posted by XanTium | April 7 16:41 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From mtv.com:
[QUOTE]
If everything goes according to plan, Microsoft's response to Nintendo's Wii will appear before the end of the year, a developer who has been briefed on the project told MTV News. The Xbox 360 manufacturer has been working on its own version of the motion-controlled Wii remote since last summer, the developer said.

While nothing has been officially announced, MTV News' source was able to provide us with details on one such 360 controller in the making: a controller designed to do all the Wii remote does, and more. Our source chose to remain anonymous in the interest of not compromising business relationships, but MTV News has confirmed Microsoft's active interest in developing a motion-sensitive controller with other industry sources.

The project has been in active development at Microsoft since last August, the source said. Rare, the Microsoft-owned studio behind Xbox 360's launch first-person shooter "Perfect Dark Zero" and the upcoming installment of the "Banjo-Kazooie" franchise, has been tasked with creating a unified interface and look for the controller. Rare has had trouble hitting its deadlines, according to the source.

Our development source sketched out a reproduction of the last prototype he'd seen, although the final product -- if it is indeed released -- may vary from this design. A key difference between the Wii remote and the prototype is the lack of a companion controller to be placed in the other hand, like Wii's Nunchuck.

Rare's difficulty in hitting development milestones has produced problems, however. "Microsoft is trying to decide how to get something out by the end of the year," said MTV News' source.

That's supposed to be a picture of a prototype? Anybody could sketch that in MS paint in 5 minutes. Even if it does turn out to be true, I think it's a little too late to have a large impact on 360 sales.

Sounds like BS to me, although i guess there is no reason they wouldn't do that. Still, this is one of the more unbelievable rumors ive heard in a while.

Yeah, I can't see many people buying a "wiimote" for the 360. No practical application.

I really don't think they'll release a controller, that would be pretty desperate. Instead use the 360 camera for motion capture, as they had mentioned they were working on this before. The problem with that is you can't read the pitch, yaw, roll, acceleration etc from the source. The camera will only be able to detect position information, and the software side will be able to estimate acceleration, but you probably won't be able to do things like rotate your arm and have that translate into the game. Maybe if they combine that with a dance mat they'll be able to make some sort of action game... But from what I read they were only talking about using it in sports games. Also, why would an anonymous source go to MTV with game news, of all places?

I have no doubt they are working on one, and have no doubt it will suck.

Why don't they make a d-pad that works first, then worry about new types of controllers.

So much negativity...

How many people who own a 360 also have a wii just for wiisports? I think this could be good for those gamers who want to involve non-gamers in their xbox life. It would be good for family gatherings etc. Providing they implement it well of course.

imho won't boost 360 sales however. Imagine wiisports with 360 graphics...

I can see this being released as an accessory bundled with a Wii sports type multi game. Same Idea as Scene it?, Guitar Hero or Sega Bass Fishing and House of the Dead 2 for Dreamcast. Could be fun, I don't understand why people are always so negative about stuff like this.
