THQ executive: Console war is 'totally irrelevant'
Posted by XanTium | April 7 23:34 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamesindustry.biz:
[QUOTE]
THQ executive Jack Sorenson has branded the hardware battle between Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo as "totally irrelevant", arguing that the rewards offered by each represent a "win" for games publishers.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz last week at THQ's product showcase in San Francisco, the US publisher's head of worldwide studios said there was "too much of an emphasis on the sports aspect of who's winning and losing", and that his company was focusing on opportunities rather than installed base.

"I think [the console war] is totally irrelevant. Even in the history of the business, other than something like the Dreamcast, you can do decent business on lots of platforms," he explained. "So the issue is not who wins, it's can an independent publisher do a good business on that platform. We're thinking everything from high-end MMO all the way to cell phones."

Well if it's totally irrelevant I hope MS learn there mistake of releasing the console a year early. I still think the quality and R&D would be soooo much better. I know everyone slagged of the PS3 (well most people) for being almost 2 years late but I think it has given them a favor I hardly see any reports of PS3 problems.

Can't really say anything about Wii don't have one though I think they should have a price cut soon or this fall cuz it's not a powerful machine I really like it but there's no titles that immediately grab my attention.

Yah but the only reason the 360 has a bigger market share then the ps3 is that it came out a year early. I bet MS would still take the 1billion dollar hit, knowing today what they knew new then. The Playstation brand is huge, but by coming out a year early, it gave the 360 quite the head start in the game rollouts and what not.

Allthough the RRoD is bad, I'm not sure from a business standpoint if releasing it a year early was a mistake, playstation is hard to beat, had they come out at the same time.. I don't think the 360 would of faired nearly as well.

I agree the business model of release it now, fix the bugs later seems to work well.

I bought ps3 because it was a better built piece of hardware & the Playstation lifespan is much longer than any other console but I have to say I do wish I could play games like Bioshock & the fact that most multi-platform games are cheaper & run better on the XBOX 360 is a disappointment.

Regrading the bashing of the Dreamcast I think the problem was that manufacturing & support was dropped so quickly that many game developers didn't have a chance to do good business. The Saturn might even have had a longer life than the Dreamcast, even so after the Saturn EA for one said they would never develop games for Sega again, point is whether he said 32X, Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast - Sadly for Sega all are justifiable
