Xbox Source about 'Newton' Motion Sensing Controller
Posted by XanTium | April 9 12:55 EST | News Category: Xbox360
From 8bitjoystick on seattlepi.nwsource.com: [QUOTE] I can now confirm the existence of the Xbox Wiimote clone project and I can tell you the project code name: "Newton"
The hardware is still being worked on and it might be a couple months before we see leaked shots of prototypes when they start to mass manufacture it but I am sure that there is an early software developer kit and prototype out there.
Microsoft is rumored to have licensed patents from Gyration and are using them to develop their motion sensing Wiimote controller. Legally Microsoft is not ripping off Nintendo but rather licensing the technology from the same place that Nintendo got it. For an example the Guitar Hero and Rockband controllers both use the same patent that is owned by Konami that they developed for Guitar Freaks.
From what I've learned from internal sources at Microsoft I can collaborate that the Newton project is moving forward and I can believe the time table that it has been in development for a while now and they could get it on the market by winter of 2008. The Newton is also going to use an LED sensor bar that can be powered by the USB ports on the 360, it is going to have an LED sensor on the front accelerometer and gyroscope sensor that can detect tilt and motion, rumble motors, wireless two way data communication with the 360, a built in Microphone for Xbox Live and voice-activated games. I guarantee this will be a complete flop...
Most people don't even like the Wii remote... they like Wii Sports and one or two other games that use it well.
They would have been better served to do a hostile take over of Squenix stock or some crap...
The Wii remote isn't the next evolution of the gaming controller, it's an experiment that interested an f-ton of people but only went over moderately well and is typically abhorred by gamers of any longevity.
The Wii attracted people with it's complete image having been dedicated to family-friendliness and the interface being completely dedicated to being approachable to non-gamers.
The Xbox 360 already has it's image set in stone, even if they made a game that was MORE APPROACHABLE than Wii Sports (which I highly doubt) it still wont attract gamers because the console has already gone too far down the path in the other direction.
It comes down to marketing and MS can't market to save their lives... their successes are typically a result of being in the right place at the right time and having deep enough pockets to buy their way out of problems when that doesn't happen.

I still dont understand why they havent made a controller for FPSs. I cant stand using the controller to play FPSs and yet that is about 80% of the games released(not actual no flamers please). So maybe this will make it easier to play FPSs?

I would actually like to see this come out if it's compatible with current fps' and it worked decently well. Not like the Wiimote in red steel, the controls were horrible. It could breath some new life into my older games.

Some of you need to be a little less short-sighted. ..
Yes, it's true Wii Sports and a handfull of other games make good use of the Wii Remote and the truth is alot of people have and are still buying Wii's just for that. I know several people that bought Wii's just for Wii sports alone. Microsoft cannot ignore that these facts. If Microsoft puts out a reasonably priced remote with their equivalent of Wii sports, (like 360 Sports or something), then that's one less reason for people to buy a Wii. The 360 would be more attractive because it would now have an appeal to the casual gamers who actually like the Wii remote type of games and still have a huge library of regular games to keep the hard-core gamers in check. All Microsoft has to do is market this the right way.
Those of you whining and complaining because Microsoft might put out a remote are not the kind of people it would be marketed to. You don't have to buy the thing.

This is lame. Why don't people get that the appeal of the Wii isn't just the stupid controller. It's a very small console, sleek and cool looking with a new controller. On top of that it was always cheap, and had a killer app right from the beginning. It was also the right system, at the right time. The expensive and EXTREME consoles (360 and PS3) don't appeal to some of the older gamers that are getting a little slower in the thumbs, and it appeals to kids (just look over at VGChartz, nothing but kiddy Wii fanboys). It's the package that appeals to people.
Outside of Wii Sports and Wii Play, very few games get the control just right. This won't do much for Microsoft. The old people and teenage girls that liked Wii, aren't going to buy this and a 360. People will just see this as a blatant ripoff despite the minor differences.

wow... well if the wii is capitalizing on it's success because of a "new interface" maybe MS can claw some of the "wow factor" away by introducing the same type of technology on a console with BETTER games and BETTER graphics.
I dunno.. my son will definately enjoy playing Rayman Ravin Rabbids with this controller. I just hope MS gets the pointer tech right because my experience on the wii has that stupid finger bobbing all over the place. I've used 3d mice with better stability.
Being able to use this tech with existing games? Sure what the hell... i already have a steering wheel, 4 wireless controllers, 4 Scene It! controllers, Rock Band accessories and a Guitar Hero guitar. Another controller isn't going to hurt.

What would be realy cool is if they did a good job of it, unlike Nintendo. Although fun to play as a group, the Nintendo is horibly inaccreate, and increadibly frusterating. As just a mild gamer, I could not even imaging playing any game that required any real skill (like Halo). I can bairly manage to play Resident Evil. The aiming is absolutly painful.
I guess all it needs is a calibration sequency similar to a touch screen computer. That is it, hopfuly MS includes a calibration sequenc.

That is such bullcrap. Are they going to have a nunchuck attachment too for your other hand?
I really don't believe this is coming out, how could they so badly rip off Nintendo, even when they stated they are just working on motion capture with the 360 camera?

how could they so badly rip off Nintendo,
The article spacificaly said that it is a licence from the same guys that licenced Nintendo, so, no it is not a rip off of Nintendo. It was never Nintendo's thing, it was Gyration thing.
