Microsoft Patents Wii Remote Killer Game Controller
Posted by XanTium | April 17 19:27 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From teamxbox.com:
[QUOTE]
We are finally able to talk more about what we know after a patent application for a gyroscopic-based input device by Microsoft has been published on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Described as a "computer pointing device (generally a mouse but alternatively a game controller or remote control device) that may be worn on the hand and operated without needing to contact a (mousing) surface," this patent was filed back in 2006.

We were told that the motion sensing controller that Microsoft was researching had the functionality of both the Nintendo Wii Remote and the Nunchuk packed into a single device, with a shape that is neither that of a banana, nor a remote controller, but more like a "pistol grip." On top, it is supposed to have an analog stick (that could be replaced by a trackball) surrounded by the four action buttons.

"On top, it is supposed to have an analog stick (that could be replaced by a trackball) surrounded by the four action buttons."

Wouldn't that get a little crowded though? It would be kinda hard to switch from an analog stick to buttons with just one thumb all the time.

And, does this have anything to do with the alleged "x-remote" thing?

Like the last poster, a little to Power Glove? This looks like something out of a VR game.

It would be better if they were made in 2 piece sets, for both hands. Analog stick and a few buttons on one, the remaining buttons on the other. (then again, that sounds like the Wii). Games are too complicated for one hand.

This is only half the solution. We need to complete this setup with a head-unit which moves the camera angle around respectively with the user's head movements. Image playing COD4 and leaning your head around to the left while the FPS on screen also moves his head but around a corner to see what's there. Wow!

Problem here is that we now move from the HD TV to a small screen in front of our eyes. But if a company can produce this with little discomfort to the user then I can tell you now this is going to free up one hand which can possibly be assigned to the gun!? How cool would that be? love.gif

NOW we are talking VR!

Hmm so I actually enjoy my wii... oh that sounds bad, anyway for me the shovelware and lack of graphical ummph is what really keeps me from loving it. On the other hand I like my 360 for its games and ability to put out great graphics to compliment gameplay. So I find myself actually excited for MS to put this out.

$20 says this is mainly for PCs, and has nothing to do with the XBox 360.

Not a fan of the wii or the wiimote, even though Nintendo is still my favorite gaming company (loved NES/SNES/N64)... However, I think something like this would be cool for real games instead of kiddy games and lame party games. Now if ms$ put a free blue ray drive in their console (which i don't care about) there would be zero reason to buy anything else...

I hope I always have the option to use a standard controller. I'm sore and stiff most of the time and don't want to move much to play games. If I want the actual experience I'll go play paint ball or something.
