DFC: 360 Likely 'Biggest Loser' in Europe
Posted by XanTium | April 30 00:53 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From next-gen.biz:
[QUOTE]
David Cole with DFC Intelligence is betting that PlayStation-loving Europe will soon be switching its loyalty to Nintendo platforms, with the Xbox 360 being left in the wakes of both rivals.

What will Nintendo's success mean for the other platforms? It is important to note that DFC Intelligence is also forecasting strong sales for the PlayStation 3 and, to a lesser extent the Xbox 360. This generation is not expected to be a case of one platform dominating like the PS2 did in the last generation. One factor that will increasingly take hold in Europe is what DFC has labeled the "second car in the garage." In the U.S. over 40 percent of game households now buy two or more of the current console systems. By comparison, Europe has largely been a one car in the garage market. In recent years, that car has been the PlayStation 2. As the game market in Europe grows we expect to see more consumers buying two or more systems (although not to the extent of the U.S.) The Wii is forecasted to be the market leader, but with a market share less than 50 percent compared with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Consumers will still need to play World of Warcraft, Grand Theft Auto IV, games on the go and so on. No one system satisfies all the diverse tastes in today's market.

It appears inevitable that, for the PlayStation 3, Sony will lose a big chunk of its PS2 user base. However, in the long-term, DFC Intelligence believes the PlayStation 3 will be a fairly strong competitor. The biggest loser in Europe is likely to be the Xbox 360. Microsoft has seen its self-proclaimed fall 2007 "greatest holiday lineup in videogame history" come and go with very little impact on the Xbox 360's position in the European marketplace. To spur sales in 2008, Microsoft is being forced to lower the price of a system that is starting to look like a senior citizen as it approaches its third birthday.

The Xbox systems have enjoyed much greater success in the U.K. than in continental Europe. In large part this is because the U.K. does not have a strong PC game market like those found in other parts of Europe. However, as in the U.S. and Australia where intense violence is more popular with gamers, U.K. gamers enjoy first-person shooter (FPS) titles and the Xbox 360 is clearly the leader in that category. Unfortunately, outside of the U.K., DFC sees the Xbox 360 continuing to struggle in Europe.

DFC? Delishious flat chest?

MS doesnt really have any big hitters left, or announced anyway. But then again, once MSG4 and FFXIII are out, neither will Sony.

{Yawn} It's a slow day when all a columnist can write about is which console he predicts will lose. Next week someone else will predict the exact opposite. These predictions are no more accurate then the fortune teller at a circus.

Don't agree with the Wii part, not many games apeal to me and it's to much money for a upgraded Gamecube. Although he is right, I have 2 nexgen consoles in my room.

They're giving the PS2's installed base more credit than it's worth; it's been out for 8 years. Of course it will have sold well by now (late adopters, replacement consoles, additional consoles at low cost, etc). I'm sure that 8 years down the road of the 360 & PS3 lifespan they'll have each sold somewhere near those numbers, if not more so. Sounds more like an attempt to influence a market than an analysis of one.

Depends on what you think a "big hitter" is.

Pure Mumbo Jumbo !!!!

Here in the UK everyone i know owns an Xbox 360, some like myself own a PS3 as well, but everyone seems in total agreement right now that the 360 gives a far better entertainment experience. If blueRay hadn't won the HD disc war the PS3 would be on eBay by now so i just think of my PS3 as a film player & thats all right now.

As for the Wii, lol just dont get me started.

I want one of these jobs where you can proclaim yourself as being important and spout all kinds of crap about whatever enters your head for the day!!
I have all three systems sat under my tv right now and I cant remeber the last time I switched on my PS3 except to watch a movie.
If Sony pulled there finger out of their ass and sorted out their PSN network and made something of it then I might use it more, and brought out a decent controller that doesn't feel like a lightweight toy with no life about it then i might feel a bit more immersed in my games.
When does the dualshock 3 hit the UK anyway as this is one of the bigest letdowns of the ps3 to me for just now.
The wii is nothing more than a gimmick in my opinion but my kids love it, and I think thats reflected in the quality of the games that keep getting released for it, and it's easy money for nintendo when they have an army of kids harrasing their parents to get the latest game for them.
However I dont think that there is a day goes by that my 360 is off , but that is more down to the little things like friends list , Live experience and the controller that is first class.
Like I say though, once Sony sort out their online experience and bring out the dualshock 3 , that might change.
Peace out.

i cannot understand why europe loves the playstation brand so much. all playstation products have great designs. but that's it. take psp for instance. looks great. all games suck though. ps3 too. all exclusive games suck. even the controller sucks. blink.gif

and i am not a fanboy as i own all 3 current gen consoles. 360 just delivers me the most gaming pleasure to date. if this is a fact. tell me, am i lying? rolleyes.gif

Possibly not lying but talking bullshit yes.
The 360 is out and out the best games machine available in the UK, no doubt but to say all PSP games suck and that ps3 games & exclusives all suck is total biased crap.

Who ever wrote the original article is also talking bullshit. Easy money for writing such rubbish.
360 is hugely popular in the UK and I don't see it as a loser in the rest of Europe either

Whoa, whoa "all" come on now for sure you have not played chains of olympus or patapon then tongue.gif

I don't see MS in too rough a spot worldwide. All they need to do is follow sony's lead with stretching out the life cylce of the PS2 and do the same for the 360 keep producing it for another 10 years, release stable hardware/motherboard, kill the propreitary harddrive and allow any hard drive to be used with console, sell it for sub $200 price point and release a new feature rich console in 2 to 3 years just about the time the PS3 is hitting its full stride.

Half of the 'fall 2007 "greatest holiday lineup in videogame history"' wasn't actually released in Europe in 2007.

Halo made it, sure, but Katamari was delayed til March, and Rock Band still isn't out.

If Microsoft wants to see sales in Europe, it needs to deactivate the region-locking, and start pressuring third-party developers not to treat Europe like shit.

Oh, and adverts for GTA4 on the 360 that actually advertised the 360 would probably help too.
