Microsoft Gears Up to Release Xbox 360 with New Chips
Posted by XanTium | May 7 23:05 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From xbitlabs.com:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft Corp. reportedly plans to release a new version its Xbox 360 video game system code-named Jasper in August and has already assigned IBM and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to make chips for the new game console. However, there are other important rumours: TSMC got orders to produce the chip for code-named Valhalla Xbox 360 design, which is rumoured to combine microprocessor and graphics chip in a single piece of silicon.

The code-named Jasper design of the Xbox 360 game console will use ATI Xenos graphics and memory controller hub (GMCH) made using 65nm process at TSMC as well as IBM Xenon central processing unit (CPU) produced at IBM's 65nm nodes. The new system design is projected to consume less electricity, use less complex cooling systems and also produce less noise.

TSMC is chosen to make the 65nm GMCH chips, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) is contracted to package and test the chips, and Nanya has won orders to supply flip-chip packaging substrates, reports China Economic News Service.

If there's another price drop I'd seriously consider buying a 65nm Arcade system to replace my old loud piece of shit that's going to die any day and get replaced by another piece of shit.

If you want to run Linux get a PS3. No modding needed.

I for one will bet getting one of these new 360's the day it comes out.

Quite a while back it was reported that the Jasper boards would be 65nm GPU. I'm guessing they got their chips around that time, and are just now getting ready to release them.

Unfortunately it's mainly the drive and badly designed vents behind the fans that produces the noise. More blades on the fans with less steep cut angles and better holes than cuts in stainless/aluminum shielding, backed by plastic with more holes... not exactly a quiet aerodynamic.

Hopefully they don't cheap out the rest of the components to further reduce cost and keep the current failure rate consistent. IMHO past consoles' later revisions seem to get shoddier PCB/component quality wise, rather than better.

What if this isn't an Xbox 360 at all? What if it's a total redesign? The Xbox 360 mini? Xbox Blue? After all, the system is 3 years old.

Now think about this, what if they added wifi to it? or a Blu-Ray drive.

Microsoft says 'the Xbox 360' will not get wifi or a blu-ray drive. What about it's sister system, the Xbox 360 mini? or Blue? They haven't denied it.

That's what I'm hoping for.

I think it's a tad too early for a mini Xbox 360. When they go for the Valhalla chipset, I could see them shrinking the whole thing down and redesigning it. I doubt making the GPU 65nm will allow them to shrink the motherboard down enough to make a redesign worth it and after the RROD fiasco, they will not want to force the issue. They need to get it right and gain back consumer confidence. I think people would be all over the mini 360 if they did it right, could keep them up there with the Wii. I think we will see it next year some time after summer and that will be Microsoft done till the 2011/12 when the next Xbox releases.

so finally the 65/65 360 is coming out that people have talked about for so long...again it would definitely be worth it if accompanied by a nice price drop - although my original 360 is still going strong...

putting "Gears" in the title made me think about something else on a first glance...

My guess is they won't come out with a BR edition for this generation. My guess/wish/whatever is that the BR addition that's in rumors currently may be for the next generation of the XBox.
