Valhalla Xbox360 Will Come in New Slim Case?
Posted by XanTium | May 12 15:05 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From tgdaily.com:
[QUOTE]
A more dramatic and perhaps visible change will happen next year: TSMC plans to begin producing the Valhalla chip, which will be the foundation of the mid-cycle refresh of the Xbox 360, thus called 'Xbox 2.5' or simply 'Xbox 540' (360+180), in fall of 2009. We learned that this new chip is apparently much more than a die-shrink and end up as a system-on-a-chip design. This change is likely to enable to redesign the Xbox 360 casing and go towards a slim-design, much like what Sony did with the Gen1 and Gen2 PS2. We believe that TSMC will use a 45 nm process for this Multi-Chip-Module package (CPU+GPU+eDRAM).

There are also some interesting pieces of information that Microsoft is shopping for a more efficient cooling solution - efficient in more ways than just one: Several people close to the cooling industry told us that Microsoft approached them and asked for better and cheaper cooling than what is used in the Xbox 360 right now. Some may claim that the current Xbox 360 cooler design is already as cheap as it gets, but we have no doubts that Microsoft will find a way to drop the cost once again.

As long as the current hard drive casing still fits the new systems and the cost is equal to or less than the current Arcade version, I'd happily buy one to replace my old loud 360 that's surely going to die a horrible death.

The hdd will most likely have a slot to mount it on top, or will be similar to the Sega CD 2 (where they included a piece to match the gap).

Can't wait for one of these, myself...

I hope they put in:
- Slim DVD Reader
- HDD 2.5" 80-120gb
- Very large heatsink, that goes from one side to another, cooled by a large fan.
- Wifi
- Integrated PSU

I think this system will consume less than 60 W.

- Integrated PSU

i would be shocked by that. when sony did their slim ps1 and ps2, they had their psu external for a reason. the psu generates lots of heat, and takes up valuable real estate inside the box. i see no way things will be any different for microsoft.

That would be really cool! That way I would never have to go in the kitchen. Now we will just need some kind of drink dispenser on it. Maybe some kind of liquid cooling system that uses game fuel.

I guess they will end up using RBJTech's fanshroud mod, tape and paper arent that expensive... laugh.gif
Pretty sad, hopefully they will concentrate more on making it better than cheaper...

They are going to have to shrink the case and cheap out on stuff if they reduce internal temps, they want to keep the current level of M$ quality RLOD... ph34r.gif

cheap cooling=bad idea m$..learn your lesson your customers will be more inclined to invest there money into your products if you just spare the cash on some good cooling to make the system last longer.

I'd just be happy if they could make something quiet, but I'm not holding my breath.
