Analysts Unmoved By 360's 10 mln US Milestone
Posted by XanTium | May 15 14:43 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From next-gen.biz:
[QUOTE]
On Wednesday, Microsoft announced that Xbox 360 has sold over 10 million units in the U.S. SVP of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business Don Mattrick stated, "History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle."

But analysts quizzed by Next-Gen question the logic behind the "first to 10 million wins" idea.

Mike Hickey with Janco Partners says that he sees "little significance" in Microsoft's announcement, calling it little more than "a corporate catalyst for a press statement and a last-chance chest-pounding moment."
"It's unclear to us if Microsoft considers the Wii console from Nintendo to be a competitive product, but we expect the Wii's installed base will likely eclipse the Xbox 360's installed base in CY08, and eventually win the console war by a wide margin."

Michael Pachter with Wedbush Morgan Securities simply called Microsoft's announcement "spin," adding, "Nintendo will pass them this month."

Good thing m$ keeps releasing these numbers or else this Michael Pachter guy would run out of stuff to analyze. He is really smart and I am always more then happy to hear about what he thinks will happen.

am i the only one who thinks the wii is going to lose steam? example of my reasoning

http://gamer.blorge.com/2008/04/27/xbox-36...-wii-beats-ps3/

the wii has a much lower attach rate than the 360. while the system was a great idea, and the hype is keeping it off store shelves, what does it have for great games aside from smash bros, zelda (which was also on gc), and now mario kart?

my must play list that i haven't played yet for the 360 on the other hand, has 20 games on it. (10 that are already out and i haven't played yet, and 10 that are scheduled for an 08 release. beyond that, there are tons of great games that i have already played

I don't think that the Wii will lose much steam - but I also think it doesn't really matter.

The Wii simply is not a direct competitor to the PS3 or the Xbox 360. Sure, they are all consoles, but they really aren't going to appeal to the same market. The simple fact is that the market that plays the types of games that are on the PS3 and the Xbox 360 (GTA IV, Halo 3, MGS4, etc.) will buy one of those systems at some point regardless of whether they own a Wii or not.

In my opinion, the Wii actually falls more into the niche category along the lines of Guitar Hero or Rock Band. People will buy it for what it is, but if they are looking to play next generation games, they will also buy another system at some point.

I 100% agree with your post. Comparing the wii to the xbox 360 or PS3 is completely ridiculous. I, much like many others own both a 360 and a wii. Why? Because they're both very good systems in their own respect. Xbox 360 rules the gaming world in terms of high end graphics, great standard gameplay, xbox live achievements, and performance. Wii on the other hand has a really fun Nintendo only collection of games. Wii is an awesome console for party games, kids, or adults that would never play a standard console. I know people of all ages that like the wii, but hardcore gamers generally own at least a xbox360/ps3 and possibly a wii in addition.

I have a Wii, PS3, 360, gaming PC, DS, PSP, and a host of last-gen consoles and am by far most impressed with the software available for the 360. PS3 is ok but its network in general is a tad above garbage while the wii simply hurts my eyes after playing with the high-def consoles. Not terribly pleased with 'any' of the motion sensing controls as they've been implemented either.

The idea wii will win the console war of this generation actually made me audibly laugh. Just sayin'

They really should not even put the Wii in the same catagory of a Next Gen system. As an owner of all 3 systems and a couple of DS Lites and I had a PSP. I can honestly say that the Wii is barely above the N64 I had years ago. Yes it does have some new ways to play games. But over all it's really just a toy. Now when you are talking about NEXT Gen, my 360 wins hands down. I really don't see the PS3 ever beating it in any way. Yes the PS3 has some nice exclusives, but after those 10% of the good games are gone you have nothing but a mere cheaply priced blue ray player. The XB360 is a true multimedia device. Nothing can touch it and I am sure it will be that way for a very long time. With the fan base of XBlive, I really think Sony should pack it up and just put out games and let M$ take over the Next Gen world.

Very true, but a console war isn't won off installed base alone. If everybody owns a wii, but nobody buys games, then Nintendo really only made money on the consoles. With the low attach rate, it's odd we aren't seeing Nintendo fighting for more, but again, they must be making money comfortably on hardware, that publishing isn't as attractive to them as Sony or Microsoft, who takes losses on hardware (though iirc, the 360 turns a profit now).

agreed, the Wii is selling more hardware but less software, MS is doing extremely well with hardware and software sales...still, Nintendo has to be much happier with the Wii than any previous recent product...

ummm who cares?

I don't even listen to analysts anyways. Their entire job is nothing more than guessing the future.....which makes them basicly gypsies....or crack heads. Take your pick.

In Michael Pachter's case, I pick crack head! My best guess is he has one of them devices that can read the future that you make out of index paper that I used to make when I was in third grade.

Even if the Wii was a direct competitor I can't see developers abandoning other platforms for it. Yes it is a good money maker but there are a lot of game dev's out there that want to push technology and feel a sense of accomplishment creating a realistic world.
